They also think like this. At that time, that king, being the master of great compassion, felt extremely unhappy and devised a method, saying: 'Like this, the fields have been ruined by drought, and the grasses, trees, and rivers of Jambudvipa have also disappeared. For the sake of rain, other sacrifices are weak. From whatever is my dominion, begin preparations for a life sacrifice of a hundred times ten dedicated individuals,' he instructed the ministers. All of them were frightened and panicked, and as if listening to persuasion, they requested to stop the life sacrifice, and in reality, they gave many sentient beings the refuge of fearlessness. Therefore, Bodhisattvas should diligently train in giving, skillful means, and using their own flesh and blood as servants, giving others the place of fearlessness. When training in this way, even if one is not capable, one should not rashly perform rituals, and giving that is haphazardly put together is also to be condemned. If the thought of compassion is very impure, giving away the body and life is prohibited by the Compendium of Trainings. Among these, great giving and supreme giving are the objects of practice for obtaining forbearance of non-arising phenomena, as stated in the Sutra Requested by the Noble Near One: 'By abiding in the forbearance of non-arising phenomena, one should also perform giving, great giving, and supreme giving.' Therefore, now that faith has not yet become strength, the mind of a beginner is as fragile as the scab of a wound, unable to endure, and those who are very wavering in entering and withdrawing, if they directly engage in the great task of benefiting others before their afflictive disease has been cured, there is a danger that they will become weary of benefiting others and generate the mind of a Hearer or Solitary Realizer, just like a boat capsizing in the ocean, unable to endure staying on land, and a swimmer who has not perfected the ability to swim will also harm himself. Therefore, even if the body has already been given away in intention, one does not actually give away flesh and blood, etc., which is explained in detail in the Compendium of Trainings, and its source is also from the Sutra of the Noble Akashagarbha: 'Desiring at the wrong time is the work of demons.' And also in the Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life it says: 'If the thought of compassion is not pure, one should not give away the body, whether in this life or in future lives.'

As it is said, "Giving up for the sake of accomplishing great deeds." Similarly, for unpleasant giving, it is considered that abandoning attachment to possessions, which is the object of contempt for non-places, is the measure of giving. As it is said in the Great Sage's Extensive Questions Sutra: "Whatever is wealth, that is the donor. Causing others to do it, the giver is the one who gives, not the donor. Giving poison, weapons, and killing beings, and giving alcohol to the reckless is impure. Doubting the ripening, and suffering from regret after giving is also impure. If one thinks that one should enjoy the ripening of merit oneself and not give it to others, that is also impure. Being happy for the Buddha at the time of sickness and death, and giving without faith by causing servants to do it is impure. Abandoning the poor and giving to the rich is impure. Great sages, the ripening of those is like planting seeds in a field with a salt gate, although it is not without ripening, it will not become fruit. Great sages, it is like planting seeds in a field that has not been plowed or cleared, and if rain falls, it may grow, but it will not become flowers and fruit." Thus it was declared. Therefore, in general, the measure of the perfection of the pāramitā of giving is not to seek the end of abandoning the poverty of others with the object of giving. From the point of view of the mind, it is desired to abandon attachment to stinginess and miserliness towards all the roots of goodness of one's own body, enjoyment. As it is said in the Bodhicaryāvatāra: "All possessions together with their fruits, giving with the mind of giving to all beings, is said to be the pāramitā of giving, therefore the mind is that itself." If it is not like that, who can eliminate all the poverty that sentient beings experience due to their own karma? Because even though the Buddhas who came in the past practiced the pāramitā of giving, there are still countless hungry ghosts and other poor beings. As it is said in the previous sutra: "If eliminating the poverty of beings is the pāramitā of giving, but there are still poor beings, how can the protector reach the other shore?" Like that. In general, although one cannot actually give one's body and life, one should get used to giving up from the heart.
