This is like a seed that produces fruit. Because of habituating to the object, it will become that way, just like the old woman of Magadha who meditated as a tiger and blocked the road. Therefore, considering that the power of the mind will manifest in this life or another life, it is said in the Compendium of Trainings that when giving food, clothing, and shelter to sentient beings from the depths of one's heart, one should forget the thought that "this belongs to others and should be used for their benefit." If one enjoys it out of attachment to one's own benefit, it is a downfall with afflictions; even if there is no attachment, but one does not grasp it with this concept, and enjoys it out of attachment for others, it is a downfall without afflictions; if one considers offerings to others as the property of others, but uses it for oneself, it becomes taking what is not given, and if the value is complete, it will become a defeat for those who hold the vows of individual liberation. That is what is said. Even so, in the noble land of India, there have been those who revile this teacher's teachings and refute them. However, the great scholar Kṛṣṇapa said, "The teacher is one who has attained accomplishment, and one should not doubt whether the words of those who have realized the truth are necessary, etc., because one can attain accomplishment by prostrating before the teacher, so saying that it is necessary, etc., is merely an excuse for fools. If one thinks that the words of those who have realized the truth are not necessary, one cannot measure its value. As Chandrakirti said: "Those who have heard little and are full of pride, speak much without root, and cannot follow, are called Chandana people." Therefore, those who do not have faith in the Bodhisattva, have not separated from the net of doubt, and want to understand without respecting the teacher's instructions should understand this. As it is said, the words of those who have realized the truth have great necessity. Therefore, thinking that things of complete value are not obtained by all sentient beings, so one should not commit a defeat; or thinking that those things are not owned by them, so we have no defeat; or thinking that there is no need to actually take it oneself and then give it with the mind, one should not obstruct virtuous thoughts. In that very text, it says: "It is not proper for someone to ignorantly disbelieve a Bodhisattva who acts in this way.

In order to fully understand the mind of generosity, which is greatly wondrous. Regarding this method, some should not have doubts. As it is said. Thus, material generosity and fearlessness-giving precede the giving of Dharma. The teacher Yeshe Nyingpo said: One cannot give the Dharma to beings who have not been gathered. Among the three types of generosity, material generosity and fearlessness-giving are the means of gathering, and the giving of Dharma is accomplished through these means. Therefore, beings should be gathered through the four objects of gathering: generosity, kind speech, beneficial action, and consistency. Among these, the meaning of the first two is easy to understand. Beneficial action refers to the very means by which one leads others onto the path, and consistency refers to diligently practicing oneself the very path shown to others. Thus, having gathered beings through the four objects of gathering, it is difficult to truly instruct those who act with faith in the three types of Dharma-giving. Through the ritual of eliminating one's own afflictions, and by reciting scriptures with love and compassion, one prays that the lineage of the white side may be liberated. After one's own liberation, one primarily benefits others in accordance with the fortune and nature of beings. As it is said in the Sutra of the Prophecy in Response to the Questions of the Noble Holder of the World: What is Dharma-giving? Giving pens, ink, and books is small. Teaching the Dharma of Hearers, Solitary Buddhas, and the Unsurpassed according to their capacity is great. Leading them to engage in the Unsurpassed Bodhi and teaching the Dharma, which is inconceivable like the sky, is extremely great. In general, the essence of Dharma-giving is to impart the sacred Dharma to the minds of others. However, for those who act with faith, to teach others in this way without having the ability to instruct in both the words and meaning of the Dharma clearly manifested in their own minds is like one blind person describing colors to another based on the sound of a swan's wings. Therefore, the prohibition against beginners engaging in Dharma-speaking is mentioned in the Ten Laughters of a Bodhisattva.
