Even if the giving is vast, if it is mixed with the motivation of the five desires, the result is uncertain. As it says in the "Ten Wheels of Ksitigarbha Sutra": 'It is for the benefit and happiness of all sentient beings, not for the sake of a ripe fruit. Even if the object of giving is small, it will become a true field of merit. Even if the object of giving is great, if it abides in the five desires, and is not sealed with the hand of the noble ones, it will abide in an uncertain group.' Great giving, as the sutra says: 'Great giving is giving away sons, daughters, and family.' Like a king who competes with all giving, jealous of how other kings take wealth, but without the certainty of benefiting himself, he becomes greedy and deceitful, giving away all his sons, daughters, and possessions. Those people's hearts are filled with suffering, feeling as if their hearts are about to break, but because they do not turn away from the mind of giving, but give with a mind of no regret. Like this, we must repeatedly think about this courage and benefit, feel great shame for our own stinginess, and get used to making vows. As it says in the "Compendium of Perfections": 'Remember the supreme conduct of the Buddhas, contemplate the vows that follow them, and in order to eliminate attachment, contemplate these supreme vows in your heart.' That's how it is. The most difficult thing to give is giving away one's head and limbs. As the sutra says: 'The most difficult thing to give is what is difficult to do, giving away one's head, eyes, hands, feet, and so on.' When our teacher became the Earth-Moving Powerful King, a beggar with a severed waist asked for an axe and other things, so he accumulated many carpenters, sawed off his own waist with a sharp saw, and gave it away. When he became King Moonlight, he cut off his head and gave it to a fierce Brahmin. When the Earth-Moving Powerful King became Akashagarbha, he accepted all three kinds of giving: giving, great giving, and extremely difficult giving. In the later giving, the waves of his own body's blood surged, and he felt the pain of being touched by weapons.

The suffering of samsara is extremely difficult to endure, and one must repeatedly contemplate the means of connecting with inexhaustible prayers for as long as hundreds of years. As it is said in the Sutra of the Saltwater River: "Wives and children, royal power and great wealth, and flesh, blood, fat, body, and eyes, I have given away for the sake of others' joy. Whatever benefits sentient beings is the supreme offering to me. Whatever harms sentient beings harms me." Therefore, like this, my body is like a heap of impure vomit, and life is like a violent wind, extremely unstable. Both of these follow karma like a shadow, and are subject to others. Even if guarded in every way with many doors, they are still severely harmed by fire, water, cliffs, and kings, wild animals, thieves, and so on. Therefore, they are not under one's own control. Even if it were not so, as it is said in the Questions of King Clear Light: "Great King, even if you ride on an elephant's saddle, a horse's back, or a chariot, holding conches, drums, pottery drums, hand drums, playing various musical instruments, holding umbrellas, banners, pennants, and victory banners, waving fans with jeweled handles, fly whisks, and palm-leaf fans, with elephants, cavalry, and a small army following behind, princes, brahmins, educated ministers, guides, and hundreds and thousands of people with folded hands paying homage to you, and proclaiming 'Victory! Victory!', enjoying external splendor, before long, you will lie motionless in bed and die, and be carried away by four people. Fathers and mothers, brothers and sisters, wives, sons and daughters, relatives and friends, male and female servants, workers, those who live on leftovers, ministers, and the city dwellers will all be overcome with grief, raising their hands and beating their chests, crying out with extreme sorrow: 'Alas, poor child! Alas, my protector! Alas, my warrior! Alas, my master!' The long robes and the city dwellers will all look at you with fear, and depart."
