The great generosity is to give away sons and daughters, and to give away one's household is extremely difficult, to give away one's head and limbs. The essence of generosity is non-attachment, it is the antidote to attachment to enjoyment. As it is said in the Bodhisattva Grounds: What is the essence of generosity? The mind of a Bodhisattva that does not care for all possessions and his own body, which arises together with non-attachment, and the actions of body and speech that completely give away the objects to be given, which are taken up by that, that is, any actions of body and speech that are taken up by the virtuous mind of giving. The divisions are: Dharma giving, material giving, and fearlessness giving. Among these, from the point of view of the importance of necessity, Dharma giving is mentioned first in the Bodhisattva Grounds, but from the point of view of the importance of function, here material giving and fearlessness are combined. Among these, the first point is: it is not necessary to have abundant objects to give away, but after giving away all one's possessions to sentient beings, even if one has only a little left, one thinks that it belongs to sentient beings. And on top of that, one must accept the mind of giving from many aspects, for example, if this great earth becomes food and drink, I will be able to relieve the poverty of all the poor, such as pretas, like this, by increasing the vast mind of giving that pacifies the suffering of others, one must destroy the clinging of miserliness like a snake shedding its skin. As it is said in the Ornament of the Sutras: The generosity of a Bodhisattva is non-attachment, non-greed, and without attachment. Attachment itself is not, non-attachment, non-greed, and without attachment. Previously, someone competed with the generosity of the food offering of the helpless protector, but could not surpass him, so he renounced all wealth and became a renunciate, and was prophesied to be superior to the food offering. Therefore, those who have wealth should give even more, first starting with giving a little food and drink, gradually increasing the power of wisdom, and then learning to give clothes, dwellings, utensils, vehicles, mounts, elephants, and even countries. As it is recorded in the Jataka: In the past, the king of Kosala gave a bowl of hot porridge to four ascetics, and by the result of that,

To obtain kingship, and not to be overwhelmed by merchants, one cannot say no when asked by a beggar, and even if others steal from one's own house, one should especially cultivate joy in that, and when one becomes poor, one should give alms from the money from cutting grass and selling it, and one should learn to be like a deceased king who built a permanent offering house and gave alms. From the Sutra: Therefore, the accumulation of merit is perfected by material giving, and the accumulation of wisdom is perfected by Dharma giving, and these two should be accomplished in all ways. What is material giving? It is like this: giving, great giving, and extreme giving. Giving is giving food, clothing, and elephants to others. So it is said. The object of giving is also a field of good qualities, and those with afflictions are the opposite, one should not think so, because it hinders the realization of the equality of Dharma-nature, and especially giving with compassion to inferior fields is the way of the Great Vehicle. As it is said in the Sutra: All sentient beings have equal and impartial minds, and do not discriminate. If one thinks that the Three Jewels are my field of merit, but animals and so on are not, then that Bodhisattva will not realize the equality of Dharma-nature. Therefore, the Three Jewels and the Lama are good fields for giving, but animals and so on are not, it is like planting seeds in a salty field. If one thinks like this, it will not become the Dharma of a Bodhisattva. So it is said. However, the choice of the field of giving is intended for those who are dull-witted, beginners, whose minds are not trained, and who are not accustomed to compassion. As it is said in the Sutra Requested by the Righteous Man Increased: There are five unsurpassed givings: the Tathagata, the Sangha, the Dharma speaker, the sick, and the father and mother. And also: Even if they are not noble, parents, the sick, and the Dharma speaker, and the Bodhisattva of the last birth, the merit is said to be immeasurable. Like that. Therefore, even if the object of giving is small, if there is no expectation of maturation and fruit, it will become a true field of merit, and the object
