Perfection of generosity, etc. From there, foolish people say this: "Enlightenment is attained by only one method, that is, by the method of emptiness." Those people's conduct becomes completely impure. That's what they say. However, wisdom that is extremely firm in habituation is the exhaustion of defilements. Therefore, such a person has neither abandoned the aspect of skillful means nor accomplished anything. Why? Because what is to be abandoned and what is to be accomplished are only conceptualizations. Here, in the stage of learning the path, if one does not rely on emptiness, which possesses all aspects of skillful means such as generosity and is endowed with all supreme qualities, then one will not be able to truly see the meaning of wisdom because one has abandoned the main cause of realizing emptiness, which is the accumulation of merit dependent on skillful means. Therefore, wisdom grasped by skillful means and conduct grasped by wisdom are mutually dependent on each other as the path. This is the definite principle taught by the noble Vimalakirti: "What is the bondage of bodhisattvas? What is liberation?" Grasping samsara without skillful means is the bondage of bodhisattvas. Going to samsara with skillful means is liberation. Grasping samsara without wisdom is the bondage of bodhisattvas. Going to samsara with wisdom is liberation. Wisdom not grasped by skillful means is bondage. Wisdom grasped by skillful means is liberation. Skillful means not grasped by wisdom is bondage. Skillful means grasped by wisdom is liberation. It is said that the union of these two is emptiness endowed with all supreme aspects. As stated in the Ratnakuta Sutra: "What is emptiness endowed with all supreme aspects?" It is that which is inseparable from generosity, inseparable from ethics, and so on, extensively teaching up to wisdom. Furthermore, the Guhyasamaja Tantra also states the principle of perfecting the form of emptiness: "Generosity, ethics, patience, and so on, possessing all supreme aspects, are called the form of emptiness." That's what it says. Thus, having correctly identified the path to be learned, the speed of progress on the path depends on the three differences in the intellectual capacity of the individual who practices it.

The three princes who accomplish through the power of wisdom: first for themselves, then desiring to liberate beings, the great aspiration of Bodhicitta like a king; desiring to liberate themselves and beings simultaneously, the supreme wisdom mind like a boatman; liberating beings first, then desiring peace, the incomparable Bodhicitta like a shepherd. Dull beings are liberated in thirty-three countless eons, medium beings in seven, and sharp beings in three. Among them, dull-witted Bodhisattvas first strive for the means to attain Buddhahood themselves and for wisdom, and then liberate beings. This is called the Bodhicitta of great aspiration like a king. Just as a Chakravartin king first obtains his own kingdom and then considers how to bring happiness to his subjects. Desiring to be liberated together with sentient beings, like merchants and travelers crossing a river together, this is called the supreme wisdom mind, which is for those of medium capacity. The Bodhicitta without great aspiration, like that of a shepherd, is called the incomparable Bodhicitta. Just as a shepherd does not feel at ease in all dangerous places, such as crossroads or places where wild animals roam, until all the cattle, sheep, and other livestock are completely out of danger. Similarly, after generating Bodhicitta, even if all the precepts have been learned and the ability is perfected, the Bodhisattva remains in the state of the tenth Bhumi until Samsara is emptied, and will not attain Buddhahood, like the noble Manjushri and Avalokiteshvara. The first requires thirty-three countless eons, the second requires seven, and the third requires three eons to attain unsurpassed Bodhi, as stated in the Ratnakuta Sutra: Those with the Bodhicitta of great aspiration are liberated from Samsara in thirty-three countless eons; those with the supreme wisdom mind are perfected in seven countless eons; those with the incomparable Bodhicitta attain perfect enlightenment in three countless eons. Why is that? Because the power of the mind is small, medium, and great. These can be compared to a Chakravartin king, a boatman, and a shepherd. Therefore
