I am in a great position, which is clear from this. Among them, what the Mahayana practitioners need to accomplish is that with the wisdom of realizing Suchness, they do not abide in samsara, and with the means connected with great compassion, they do not abide in nirvana. The state of not abiding in nirvana is accomplished through the two accumulations supported by the truths of conventional and ultimate reality, or through the gate of means and wisdom. As stated in the "Inconceivable Secret Sutra": "The accumulation of wisdom will abandon all defilements. The accumulation of merit will nourish all sentient beings. O Bhagavan, thus it is that Bodhisattvas, great beings, should strive for the accumulation of merit and wisdom." Thus, by means of generosity and other methods, holding the perfect fruits of great enjoyment such as the form body, pure lands, and retinues, the Thus-gone ones do not abide even in complete nirvana. With pure wisdom, they have completely abandoned the root of samsara, which is the reversal, and therefore do not abide in samsara. This is a path free from imputation and denial. As it is also stated in the "Noble Collection of the True Dharma": "The Thus-gone one is born of means and wisdom, and it should be known that he also exists dependent on others." Thus, in all the profound stages of mantra practice, first taking refuge, generating the mind of enlightenment, prostrations, the seven-branch prayer, mandalas, the hundred-syllable mantra, the yoga of the guru and deity, and so on, are shown to be practiced with a basis of hundreds of thousands of repetitions. This is the aspect of means. And all of these are practiced with wisdom that does not conceptually grasp the three spheres, so it is the union of means and wisdom. As it is said in the "Noble Generation of Faith Power Sutra": "What is skillful in means? It is being skilled in knowing the collection of all dharmas. What is wisdom? It is being skilled in knowing that all dharmas are without difference." Thus, mandalas, offerings, water tormas, and so on are generosity, and practicing acceptance and rejection without error according to the entrance of one's own vehicle is morality, and diligence in virtuous deeds.

Practicing patience is patience. Encouraging oneself and spending day and night in virtuous activities is diligence. Holding the mind directly on the object without distraction is meditation. These, when grasped by the view of the three spheres being empty, are wisdom. Within this, accumulating virtuous Dharma through the seven-limbed practice and others, and being grasped by bodhicitta and dedication, the discipline of benefiting sentient beings is also complete. Among the four means of gathering, gathering through generosity is easy, and sweet speech is discipline. Encouraging others to engage in virtue through talks on patience, diligence, and so on, and engaging in beneficial actions, is benefiting others with advice. Acting in accordance means that for those to be tamed, one first accomplishes the essential meaning of what is taught, which is the conduct of those who renounce. This is especially important because one cannot tame others without having tamed oneself. The *Ten Dharmas Sutra* says: 'If one strives to settle all sentient beings in taming and peace, but one is not tamed, not peaceful, and not guarded, then it is not one's own part. One should be peaceful, tamed, and guarded.' Some ignorant ones who are not guided by virtuous friends, secretly considering themselves to be wise beginners, cling to the meaning of the non-conceptual sutras spoken for those of sharp faculties, and neglect the aspect of skillful means. This is not a fault of the Dharma, but a fault of the person. The *Summary of the Mahāyānasaṃgraha* says: 'To those foolish people, it is said that Bodhisattvas should only study the Prajñāpāramitā and disparage the other pāramitās. Maitreya, what do you think? In the past, the king of Kāśī, who gave his own flesh to the hawk for the sake of the pigeon, was that a deranged wisdom?' Maitreya replied: 'No, Bhagavan.' The Bhagavan said: 'Maitreya, when I practiced the Bodhisattva conduct, I accumulated roots of virtue endowed with the six pāramitās. Did those roots of virtue cause harm?' Maitreya replied: 'No, they did not.' The Bhagavan said: 'Maitreya, you have perfectly accomplished the pāramitā of generosity for sixty kalpas, and for sixty kalpas you have held
