Why? The ultimate is not the object of the mind. The mind is considered to be conventional. Thus it is said. The commentary from the Indian text says: 'Ultimate and' etc. are mentioned. Here, the term 'ultimate' is the name of all things, but it is very hidden, referring to the nature of all things without distinction. That itself is the peaceful ultimate, which is that very nature. However, the mere dependence on a small part of that nature is only a fabrication, because it is the object of discrimination. Furthermore, minds such as perception with and without aspects are called conventional, because they obscure the vision of the ultimate. This is very clear. Moreover, in the face of the aspects of the mind's object and its elaborations, all phenomena either converge into one or remain in multiplicity. However, the ultimate is extremely contradictory to that, so it is impossible to combine with the mind. Even so, the Samdhinirmocana Sutra says: 'The realm of conditioned phenomena and the nature of the ultimate are the nature of being free from one and different. Whoever realizes one and different is one who has entered improperly.' This is the intention of those who accept the tenets according to worldly conventions. If the conventional and the ultimate appear, they appear the same; if they do not appear, they do not appear the same. It is merely said that the essence is one. Briefly, the establishment of the tenets is that the ultimate of knowledge is investigated by the mind, and the ultimate of things is shattered by a hammer. The indivisible atom is the system of the Hearers. Among them, there are two subdivisions: the Vaibhashikas and the Sautrantikas. The former is the characteristic of the Vaibhashikas, who do not even accept the term 'self-awareness,' and who speak of the Hinayana tenets. In terms of the ground, path, and result, the ultimate of knowledge of the ground's phenomena is not harmed by the investigation of the mind, and the ultimate of things is not harmed by being shattered by a hammer. The continuum of knowledge and the grossness of things are conventional. The moment of knowledge and the indivisible atom of things are considered ultimate. Vasubandhu says: 'Whatever is broken by a hammer and examined by the mind, if it is removed, the mind does not enter it. Like a pot of water, it exists conventionally, but the ultimate exists otherwise.'

Thus, in the Vaibhashika school of the Shravakas, all phenomena that can be abandoned by the mind's clinging to them, either by being destroyed by an opponent or by being analyzed by reason, are conventional truths. For example, when any appearance of a thing remains unchanged, the thought arises, "This is it." However, when it is destroyed by a hammer and anvil, etc., the appearance of analysis disappears, and the coarse mind of clinging to it also ceases. This is what is observed. Ultimate truth is that even if the subtle particles are destroyed by an opponent and refuted by reason, the phenomena for which the mind's self-grasping cannot be abandoned are considered to be ultimately real. For example, indivisible atoms, indivisible moments of consciousness, and unconditioned phenomena. Furthermore, conventional truth and imputation are synonymous, and ultimate truth and substantial existence are considered synonymous. In general, this school well refutes the self of the person that is accepted by the outsiders and promises no-self. Understanding its view is merely a stepping stone to better understanding the view of the Sutra school, and in addition, it accepts that both space and common sense are both, co-emergent cause and effect, and cause and effect with five similarities, etc. Furthermore, since the three times are also considered to be substantially existent and things, they will never become non-existent, etc., which is a very coarse view. The Kashmir Vaibhashikas, like the Sutra school, have the characteristic of accepting the continuum of karma as the basis for the connection of karma. Regarding the classification of the path, it is only based on the sixteen aspects of the four truths, impermanence, etc., that the classification of the five paths is made, and the classification of the ten bhumis, etc., is not accepted. Furthermore, what is to be abandoned by these paths are the afflictions and the ignorance that is contrary to them. Abandoning the former results in the inferior Arhat state, and abandoning the latter, non-afflictive ignorance, results in the attainment of the Buddha's state. The sixteenth path, the subsequent knowledge of the path, and the fifteen moments of the path of meditation and the path of seeing are also considered to arise in sequence. Furthermore, from the point of view of the result, even for the inferior Arhat just mentioned, it is accepted that there is a nature of decline, etc. Therefore, it is also acknowledged that it is possible to fall from the attained abandonment and realization and become a stream enterer.
