I generate the mind of enlightenment, but do not hold, recite, or chant the Mahayana scriptures. I do not properly contemplate them, but instead, I attend to the Hearer's Vehicle and associate with those who follow it. I read and chant the Hearer's Vehicle, contemplate and fully understand it, and also cause others to read it, until they fully understand it. Such a person becomes dull in wisdom and is drawn back from the path of unsurpassed wisdom, and regresses. The power of wisdom and the eye of wisdom that arise from the cultivation of the mind of enlightenment of that Bodhisattva also become dull and deteriorate. This is a Bodhisattva who travels like a cart pulled by livestock. Then, what is a Bodhisattva who travels like a cart pulled by an elephant? For example, someone wants to traverse that many world realms, and he sets out on a cart pulled by an elephant with eight limbs. After a hundred years, he reaches a distance of two thousand yojanas, but a great wheel of wind blows him back from that path until there is no opportunity. Similarly, if someone generates the mind of enlightenment and also holds, reads, and chants the Mahayana scriptures, and properly contemplates them, and also relies on the Hearer's Vehicle, until he reads and understands the Hearer's Vehicle, this is a Bodhisattva who travels like a cart pulled by an elephant. What is a Bodhisattva who travels like the sun and moon? For example, someone wants to traverse that many world realms, and if he travels like the sun and moon, can he traverse all those world realms? It is answered: Blessed One, it takes a very long time to traverse them. The Blessed One said: Similarly, if someone generates the mind of enlightenment and does not rely on the Hearer's Vehicle, until he understands it, and does not even read a single verse of the Hearer's Vehicle, but only understands the Mahayana, this is a Bodhisattva who travels like the sun and moon. What is a Bodhisattva who travels like the miraculous powers of a Hearer?

What is a Bodhisattva who travels like a Shravaka? For example, if someone wants to transcend so many world realms, can the miraculous power of a Shravaka transcend those world realms? Answer: World Honored One, it cannot be quickly transcended. The World Honored One taught: Similarly, if someone generates the mind of enlightenment, believes in the Mahayana, reads the Mahayana, and respectfully and reverently focuses on, strives for, relies on, fully seeks, completely upholds and remembers the Bodhisattvas who uphold the Mahayana, and does not abandon the Mahayana even for the sake of life, and offers with great reverence flowers and cushions, and does not despise the Bodhisattvas who have not yet practiced, this is a Bodhisattva who travels like the miraculous power of a Shravaka. Then, what is a Bodhisattva who travels like the miraculous power of a Tathagata?

reason. Just as a seed falls into the ground, (it is said that) generating the supreme mind of enlightenment, not emphasizing the generation (of the mind of enlightenment) is the main thing. After teaching this, merely generating the mind of enlightenment is like planting the seed of supreme enlightenment in the continuum of ordinary beings. If it is not cultivated so that it does not degenerate and increase, then the path of the lesser vehicle will become a great obstacle, therefore, like this, the path of the hearers and solitary realizers only goes to counteract specific afflictions, for example, different medicines each eliminate different diseases. The mind of enlightenment is like the nectar of the gods, it can uproot all diseases from the root, similarly, it can counteract all afflictions, and is the unerring cause for attaining Buddhahood. Therefore, for bodhisattvas who are weak in heart and unskilled in means, who turn away from the path of the lesser vehicle, those who are skilled in the profound and vast meaning of the Great Vehicle, are like the boatman who killed the black man with a short spear with great compassion, thereby completing the accumulation of forty thousand eons; and like the Brahmin boy who loved the stars, who faced danger because of his infatuation with the merchant's daughter, who gave up celibacy with the intention of great compassion in order to save his life, thereby completing the accumulation of twenty thousand eons, there is no need to accumulate countless three eons. As stated in the Teaching of Vimalakirti: Mother is the Perfection of Wisdom, Father is skillful means, All protectors are born from this. Loving the Dharma is the wife, Loving-kindness and compassion are the daughter, Dharma and the two truths are the son, The meaning of emptiness is the family of the mind. Likewise, all afflictions, Are students who are freely employed. The friend is the limb of enlightenment, The mind transforms into the supreme enlightenment lineage. The companion who always accompanies it, Is the six perfections. Clairvoyance is its mount, The Great Vehicle is the unsurpassed vehicle. The driver is the mind of enlightenment, The path is the eightfold path of peace. Thus, it is shown that the body of the vessel of the Bodhisattva is without incompleteness. Next, briefly explain the difference in the power of what arises from where. From the three powers arises the mind of enlightenment, Great compassion and accumulating merit take refuge. Thought and action are said to be the power of cause. Therefore, one must first be skilled in the cause of arising
