One should think, "How pitiful are those who are harmed!" As it says in the Compendium: "Whoever wishes to definitely emerge into this Buddha-dharma, should have equanimity towards all sentient beings, regard them as parents, and abide in a mind of benefiting and a mind of love. Speak without harshness, be honest, and speak gently." Also, as it says in the Mother Sutra: "Even if a Bodhisattva is greatly harmed by others, they should not argue with them, harm them, or become agitated. Even if they are killed, they should not be angry with them. They should not be angry with any sentient being. They should generate steadfast faith in the Bodhisattvas." Also, as it says in the Sutra of Fearless Wisdom: "A Bodhisattva should regard all sentient beings as their children, and regard them as their own body." Likewise, relying on the accumulation of merit to generate the mind of the Great Vehicle, among the thousand Buddhas of the Fortunate Aeon, when the Tathagata's name becomes widely known, offer a cloth covering to the Tathagata named Lamp Light, and when the Sugata Radiant One becomes a beggar, offer an oil lamp to the Tathagata Amitabha, and generate the mind of enlightenment by preceding it with the accumulation of merit. As it is said: "Opening the door of the precious casket of the essential instructions of the Middle Way, the means to connect with it are accumulating merit, purifying the continuum, and taking special refuge." Accumulating merit means performing the seven-branch practice three times during the day and three times at night, reciting and reading the profound Prajnaparamita Sutra, reciting dharanis, extensively making offerings to the Three Jewels, holding feasts for the Sangha with offerings, holding children's feasts, giving extensive charity to the unprotected, and giving extensive torma offerings to those who wander at night, and so on. Purifying the continuum also means reciting and reading profound sutras as before, reciting dharanis, performing the seven-branch practice, reciting the Sutra of the Three Heaps, cutting off the continuum of karmic obscurations, and confessing sins with scriptures such as the Golden Light Sutra or the Drum Sound Verses. As it is said. Taking refuge is suppressing sins.

The power of reliance is unsurpassed. Generally, it is difficult for those with sins to generate the mind of enlightenment. Therefore, as a remedy, the Sutra of Four Dharmas states: "Through the power of reliance, one can overcome the sins that have been committed and accumulated." Here, the power of reliance refers to taking refuge in the Three Jewels and not abandoning the mind of enlightenment. Thus it is said. Among these, the distinctions of taking refuge are explained by verses such as, "Until reaching the essence of enlightenment." Furthermore, the Ornament of Sutras explains five powers: the power of friends, the power of resources, the power of the root, the power of hearing, and the power of habituation to virtue. Instability and stability arise from these. Similarly, Master Asanga, following the White Lotus of Compassion and the Sutra of Ten Dharmas, also explained that the mind of enlightenment arises from four conditions and four powers. The four conditions are: generating the mind of enlightenment upon seeing the perfections of the Tathagata; generating the mind of enlightenment upon seeing the benefits; generating the mind of enlightenment upon seeing the faults of the degeneration of the sacred Dharma; and generating the mind of enlightenment upon seeing the suffering of sentient beings. The four powers are: the power of the seed, the power of practice, one's own power, and the power of others. Among these, the first is: because the lineage of past habituation to the Great Vehicle is awakened, now merely hearing the qualities of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas generates the mind of enlightenment. The second is: relying on a noble individual, hearing the Dharma from them, contemplating its meaning, and so forth, one becomes accustomed to the side of virtue. The third is: wanting complete enlightenment through the strength of one's own habituation to virtue is one's own power. The fourth is: wanting complete enlightenment through the strength of being encouraged by others is the power of others. These eight causes and conditions, arising from one's own power and the power of the seed, are the stable cause of the entering mind; if arising from the power of others and the power of practice, they cause the aspirational mind to be unstable. To summarize these meanings: faith directed towards the Buddha, compassion directed towards sentient beings, and knowing the benefits of the mind of enlightenment are the unmistaken causes for generating the mind of enlightenment. This should be recognized. In this way, two types of individuals who can serve as the basis for taking the mind of enlightenment are shown: one who holds any of the seven classes of individual liberation vows, or
