Even if the method is similar, if receiving from a lama, (the lama should) explain the faults of samsara and the benefits of liberation, especially the nature of bodhicitta, and the lama himself should tame the mind. The words to be taken are as explained in the chapter on discipline, or the ritual of taking as explained in the Compendium of Trainings. Alternatively, the receiver bathes, puts on good clothes, generates the thought of the virtuous friend as the Buddha, prostrates, offers a mandala, offers resources, offers the seven-branch offering, and then kneels with the right knee on the ground, palms together. Without mental obstacles such as anger, weary of the edge of samsara, free from attachment to the edge of peace, with a mind of joy and delight, having trained the mind in the meaning of the four immeasurables, one should recite the following. Then, just as the thousand and two Buddhas of the Fortunate Aeon, the Tathagatas, Arhats, Perfectly Awakened Ones, and Bhagavans, and the Bodhisattva Mahasattvas who dwell on the great earth, have generated the unsurpassed, perfectly complete bodhicitta, so too, I (name) also, in order to generate the unsurpassed, perfectly complete bodhicitta, from this time until reaching the essence of enlightenment, take refuge in the Buddhas, the Bhagavant, the best of bipeds. I take refuge in the holy Dharma, the best of those who are peaceful and free from desire, the main vehicle of the Great Vehicle. I take refuge in the Sangha, the best of assemblies, the noble Bodhisattvas, the non-returning Sangha. Reciting three times establishes the basis of the vows. As stated in the Seventy Verses on Refuge, "All vows exist, but not for those who have not taken refuge." As quoted before. In the ritual composed by Jowo, there is a request for each deity. Then, in order to hold the mind, manifesting great compassion, with the single-pointed intention to liberate all sentient beings without exception, I request all the Buddhas, the Bhagavant, who dwell in the ten directions to pay attention to me. I request the Bodhisattva Mahasattvas who dwell on the ten bhumis to pay attention to me.

May the earth deity also heed me. May the great Vajra-holder Lamas also heed me. Just as the Buddhas, the Bhagavad Ones of the past, and the Bodhisattvas, the great beings who dwell on the great earth, generated the mind of perfect enlightenment, so too, I, named so-and-so, from this day forth until I reach the essence of enlightenment, generate the mind of unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment. Those sentient beings who have not been liberated, I will liberate. Those who have not been freed, I will free. Those who have not been given breath, I will give breath. Those who have not completely passed beyond sorrow, I will cause to pass beyond sorrow. This should be recited three times to take the vow. Having taken it in this way, Always, three times during the day and night, Strive diligently to generate the two aspects of Bodhicitta. By doing so, the dormant Bodhicitta will be awakened, what has declined will be restored, and it will not be forgotten. To show the certainty of how to obtain it, At the peak of aspiration, dharmas arise from conditions, the first statement is aspiration, the second is entry, the third is obtaining both firmly, the view of the ocean cloud is unsurpassed. That is, with the first statement, aspiration, with the second, entry, and with the third, obtaining both in a very firm manner, therefore, as the ocean cloud said. Therefore, with the first statement, the second, and the third, aspiration, entry, and obtaining the supreme quality of both being very firm, thus it is taught. If, at the time of reciting the first statement, one thinks that reciting the commitment of entry should not be aspiration, but the mind of aspiration also pervades entry, therefore, by taking the vows of entry, aspiration also increases along with it, but entry does not pervade aspiration, therefore, in the "Lamp for the Path" it is also said: "Except for the self-nature of the mind of entry, the vows, the true aspiration will not increase." Moreover, these occasions of taking vows and so forth are the time for seeking the meaning of conventional Bodhicitta, therefore, at the time of convention, all dharmas depend on conditions, therefore, at this time of taking aspiration and entry simultaneously, the two are not different, but the substance of the mind is one, at one time, acting as one nature, it arises, that is, the Bodhi-
