From the Bodhisattva-bhumi: These two, aspiration and engagement, are without difference in essence, and acting for the sake of others is the same. It should be known that their nature is without difference. It is said so. Then, what is the necessity of arranging them as different rituals? This is aimed at those who wish to generate the mind of enlightenment but are unable to take vows. In general, regarding the identification of aspiration and engagement, some, such as the Sthavira-danta sect, say that the worldly path is aspiration, and engagement is from the power of seeing the truth. Some say that those who have the ability to accumulate merit are engaged, and those who do not have this ability are aspiring. In Krishna-pa's difficult commentary, it says: Some say that the mind of enlightenment that has the ability to accumulate merit is called the mind of engagement, and all minds of enlightenment that do not have the ability to accumulate merit are called aspiration. These statements are not correct. Here, it is said that a person with a purified mind makes aspirations for enlightenment, abides in the training, and without abandoning the training, follows and protects it, practicing the six perfections. This itself is the increase of the mind of enlightenment and the mind of engagement. Those who have reached the other shore of wisdom explain it this way. Therefore, they consider the essence of aspiration and engagement to be the same. When the ultimate mind of enlightenment, obtained through the power of meditating on characteristics, arises in the mindstream, it is unreasonable to think that it depends on rituals and other conditions, because one sees that all phenomena are without self. As it says in the Lankavatara Sutra: Others see that all phenomena depend on conditions, and therefore they turn to the wisdom of nirvana, because they do not see that phenomena are without self. Therefore, those great wise ones do not have liberation. Having obtained the mind of enlightenment in this way, in order to make it grow more and more, first praise your own mind: Previously, not to mention for the sake of others, I had never even dreamed of it for my own sake. This excellent quality of the precious mind has made my existence priceless. Even if I and others have taken endless births seeking the limits of birth and death, this kind of mind with excellent qualities that has arisen today is beyond the reach of the worldly guardian deities and the power-born.

Those ascetics, the progenitor of the world, Brahma, father, mother, or self, etc., all of them, not to mention for the sake of others, have never directly seen it even for their own sake, nor have they dreamed of it even in a dream, nor have they experienced it. As Shantideva, who attained accomplishment and had the prophecy of the noble Manjushri, said: Whether it is a father or a mother, who has such altruistic thoughts? Even the gods and ascetics, does Brahma also have this? For those sentient beings, in the past, even for their own sake, they have not dreamed of such a mind, how can it arise for the sake of others? Thus, the precious Bodhicitta, which is impossible for others and has not been experienced by oneself, I have obtained today, and I have perfectly taken the vows of a Bodhisattva, therefore I contemplate with great joy that my existence has a result and has become a priceless treasure. For what reason? Just as someone of low caste obtains a noble caste, especially like obtaining the position of a Brahmin, today I have become the son of all victors, and I have obtained the title of Bodhisattva. Just as in this world, people of low caste such as Chandalas and carpenters are given the authority of the kingdom of a king with a noble caste, we were also previously fallen from the lineage of Bodhisattvas, separated from loving-kindness, and determined to be vile sinners without compassion. Today, because of obtaining the arising of Bodhicitta, we are born into the lineage of the Buddha and have become the sons of the Victorious Ones, and as long as that mind does not decline, we will be included in the group called Bodhisattvas. As it is said in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara: "Today my life has a result, I have well obtained a human existence, today I am born into the Buddha's lineage, now I have become a Buddha's son." Thus, in the tenth chapter, it is said that dwelling on the first ground is to be born into the lineage of the Tathagatas. If someone says that the one who takes the vows here is not necessarily a noble person, then the Akashagarbha Sutra says: "Taking the Bodhisattva vows is also possible for those who are not noble." And the Bodhisattvabhumi says: "In the stage of faith, for one whose roots of virtue are firm, the Bodhi of..."
