Whatever cannot be taken away by all the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, by which one attains the unsurpassed perfection and eminent status. Thus it is said. The method of meditating on equanimity. The essence of equanimity is to sever love and hatred, to cut off partiality and factions, and to spread equality. Towards the three concepts of enemies, friends, and neutrals, one should equally practice benefiting them. Combine the objects with and without characteristics with diligence. There are two aspects to this: measuring the meaning of equanimity, and equanimity focused on sentient beings. The former refers to the statement that without distinguishing between good and bad, both should be treated equally. For example, concerning the eight worldly dharmas, if one does not rejoice or become attached when one obtains perfect enjoyment, then naturally one will not be discouraged if one loses it or does not obtain it, this is equanimity of gain and loss. Similarly, if one does not develop excessive fondness for those who show respect and honor, then because the clinging to hatred is small towards those who scold and beat, it is equanimity of pleasure and pain. If one becomes arrogant when one's lineage, appearance, and qualities are praised, then naturally one cannot tolerate those who expose faults and slander, to be free from both of these is equanimity without joy or sorrow towards praise and blame. If one is happy when one's qualities are known by others, or if one is depressed when one's qualities are not heard by many people, if neither of these is present, it is equanimity without joy or sorrow towards fame and obscurity. For one's own sake, if one first treats these eight dharmas equally, then equanimity focused on sentient beings will also be easily accomplished, because eliminating partiality is the characteristic of equanimity. As it is said in the Vinaya Sutra: You should have a mind that is mutually equal and impartial towards all sentient beings. Thus it is said. The aspect of focusing on sentient beings is: since samsara is endless, if one thinks of each sentient being, there is none who has not been an enemy or a friend, therefore one should not develop love and hatred towards them. The partiality of enemies and friends is the causal condition of interdependent origination in this present life, or it also originates from one's own conceptualization of holding them as enemies. One side views them as enemies, while the other side holds a mind of love,
