Indeed. Therefore, since we have entered the path of the Great Vehicle, it is like this: all sentient beings are like blind people wandering in a desolate and terrifying wilderness. They have lost the eye of discernment, are separated from the guidance of virtuous friends, have no food or drink from generosity, have lost the escort of discipline, have collapsed the dam of patience, have lost the step of diligence, are separated from the resting place of meditation, and are solely abandoned by the staff of wisdom. Some sentient beings are boiled and burned in the great hells, some are hungry and distressed in the city of pretas, some are tormented and suffer in the world of animals, some fight and quarrel in the realm of asuras, some fall from the city of gods, and some in the human realm experience the suffering of birth, old age, sickness, and death. Thus, all six are not liberated from suffering, follow after karma, are tormented by strong afflictions, and are accompanied by the fear of the lower realms, either directly or indirectly. Some may seem happy and prosperous now, but they are actually engaging in the causes of suffering, delighting in unwholesome actions. Some are experiencing the fruits of suffering, tormented and distressed by the lower realms and so on. Therefore, by truly contemplating the present conduct and future consequences of all sentient beings, who are as boundless as the sky, one will definitely manifest the cause of generating compassion. For love and compassion, which desire to be separated from suffering and to be united with happiness, the certainty of cause and effect is not seen; love is the mind without hatred, and compassion is the mind without attachment. Therefore, these two are confused in terms of what is to be generated and the cause of generation. Here, for a beginner, one should first focus on animals bound by hunters, livestock led to the slaughterhouse, those trapped in prisons, those tormented by leprosy, those oppressed by poverty, blind people without friends, and creatures without protection, etc. In short, one should first focus on those tormented by extremely heavy suffering, and thus strive to generate the great compassion that is easy to arise and unbearable. Having become accustomed to this, gradually, to all sentient beings...

Now, one should focus on this. By relying on compassion with such focus, one can bear the responsibility of benefiting others. For example, when a black antelope is chased by a hunter, it worries that it might step on small animals while running away, so it blows them away with its nose. This is because the power of compassion has grown. Compassion that has not been trained in this way mistakes love mixed with desire for compassion. Partial love is also present in eagles and wolves, as they cherish and protect their offspring. Therefore, the *Ashtasahasrika Prajnaparamita Sutra* says: The vast mind imbued with great compassion, which is definitely distinct from all Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, should be cultivated. As it says, these sentient beings are immersed in the flames of suffering, yet they do not know the means to escape from it. They are bound by hundreds of afflictions such as desire, and tormented by various kinds of wrong views. Encountering a qualified guru who can show the path is as rare as the udumbara flower. Even if one encounters a virtuous friend, one's own bad karma and various obstacles will interrupt, making it extremely difficult to truly walk the path of liberation. Therefore, they continue to wander in endless samsara, drifting in the waves of an ocean of suffering. There is not one of these beings who has not been my parent or relative in the past. They are abandoned by protectors and lords, and like being possessed, they walk on the wrong path. May I deliver them from these difficulties! May they be liberated from suffering and constantly enjoy immeasurable bliss! Thinking in this way from the depths of one's heart, at that time, the suffering of others falls upon oneself, causing tears to flow and the body to tremble, giving rise to unbearable compassion. Furthermore, engaging in actions that actually benefit others, such as saving the lives of others through body, speech, and wealth, and eliminating poverty, is a sign that compassion is equally integrated. However, while harming sentient beings in both thought and action, merely uttering words of compassion and accumulating billions of bodhicitta is like a talking bird. Thus, focus on this.
