Meditate on the unpleasant as being like the middling pleasant, and the middling pleasant as being like the excellent. Then, treat even the extremely unpleasant as you would your parents. The object of such familiarization is that all sentient beings, from beginningless time, have not been without being relatives such as parents. Such meditation should also begin with meditating on just the people in one's own household, and then gradually expand. After that, meditate on the limitless. As it is said. The measure of familiarization is: Whatever sentient being is seen, one finds pleasing and ceases to harm, and the thought of benefiting arises. Even when seeing abundance, one does not generate competitive thoughts or jealousy towards them, but rather thinks, "May this one live even longer than I, be free from illness, and have the wealth of Dharma," and only thoughts of benefiting them arise in one's mind. The Eight Thousand Verse Prajnaparamita Sutra states: "Having cultivated and stabilized a mind of loving-kindness, when beings are seen, they are pleasing, and there is no anger." Moreover, its benefits are: The Sutra of the Great Liberation Expanding in All Directions states: "Whoever in a pure world, for a kalpa, constantly protects pure morality, the merit of that is not equal to the joy of a moment of loving-kindness, therefore, one should practice loving-kindness. Whoever in this world, through body, speech, and mind, commits all evils, is certain to fall into the three lower realms, but through loving-kindness, they are immediately purified." Also, in other sutras it is said: "Son of good family, cultivating the samadhi of loving-kindness, making offerings without rising from the seat, will generate immeasurable merit." Furthermore, there are eight great qualities. Master Aryadeva said: "Gods and humans are pleased, and are always protected by them, poison and weapons cannot harm, the mind is always happy and full of joy, without effort, things are accomplished, even if not liberated, one is born in the Brahma world, these are the eight qualities of loving-kindness." Thus it is said. In order to explain the distinctions of the object of compassion, the nature of compassion is the unbearable strong mental power towards the suffering of others, and seeing the cause and effect of the suffering of all six realms, one's heart is touched and tears flow. Its divisions are three. Compassion focused on suffering beings, that is, focused on beings tormented by three or eight kinds of suffering.

With great compassion, eliminating the suffering of these beings, and compassion directed towards beings who commit misdeeds, is to eliminate with compassion all the roots of non-virtue of those beings who engage in non-virtue, which is the source of those three or eight sufferings; and compassion directed towards beings who are unable to be liberated due to the lack of conditions, is to benefit and liberate those beings who have not met virtuous friends, have not heard the Dharma, and do not know what to accept and reject, with compassion. Among these three, the first is the gateway for beginners, which is to take on the burden of wanting beings to be free from suffering. If one does not take on the burden, but merely thinks that it would be good if beings were free from suffering and rejoices when they encounter happiness, such love and compassion are also present in Hearers and Solitary Realizers, so here one needs to generate a superior intention distinguished by courage, because that is the characteristic of the Great Vehicle. As it is said in the "Inquiry of Ocean of Wisdom Sutra": "Ocean of Wisdom, for example, a merchant or householder has only one son, who is loved, pitied, cherished, pleasing, and seeing him is never disagreeable, and that child, while playing, falls into a pit of impurity. Then, that child's mother and relatives see that child fall into the pit of impurity, and after seeing him, they utter great cries, weep sadly, and wail, but they do not enter that pit of impurity to rescue that child. Then, that child's father goes to that side, and he sees his only son fall into that pit of impurity. After seeing him, he also, in a swift and hasty manner, craves with the mind of rescuing his only son, and without disgust, he descends into that pit of impurity and rescues his only son." It is said that the pit of impurity is the three realms, the only son is all sentient beings, and the mother and relatives wailing at the edge of the pit, unable to enter, is an analogy for Hearers and Solitary Realizers who, although they have near compassion, are unable to eliminate the suffering of sentient beings, while the courage of a Bodhisattva is like his father, who, with the power of superior intention, can engage in benefiting others without protecting himself.
