Bodhisattvas abiding in the stage of faith and the four parts of definite discrimination, through the power of their clairvoyance, see gods and humans, as well as sentient beings in the lower realms suffering in their respective situations, and they generate unbearable great compassion for them. Furthermore, they understand that these beings and themselves have been wandering in samsara since beginningless time, and there is no one who has not been a relative or friend to each other. Therefore, they generate a mind of loving-kindness like cherishing a single child, and they manifest various means to liberate them from suffering and establish them in happiness, and they make aspirations for this purpose. This is called loving-kindness focused on sentient beings. Bodhisattvas from the first to the seventh bhumi think in this way: all phenomena are empty in nature, but sentient beings cling to things as real, and therefore cannot realize this, wandering in the three realms and experiencing the cause and effect of suffering. How pitiful! In order to benefit them with the Dharma and enable them to realize the nature of reality, they make aspirations. This is called loving-kindness focused on the Dharma because it arises from directly realizing the suchness of the Dharma and generating loving-kindness towards sentient beings. Bodhisattvas from the eighth bhumi onwards, up to the attainment of Buddhahood, are called without focus, and they generate loving-kindness and benefit sentient beings in a non-conceptual, spontaneously accomplished manner. For example, just as a wish-fulfilling jewel and a wish-fulfilling tree, although without conceptual thought, benefit sentient beings according to their prayers, similarly, the great compassion of the Buddhas arises naturally and spontaneously in the realm of sentient beings due to the power of their past aspirations. Therefore, it is called loving-kindness without focus. Regarding these, the Bodhisattva-bhumi states: Loving-kindness focused on sentient beings is common to non-Buddhists. Loving-kindness focused on the Dharma is common to all Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. Loving-kindness without focus is not common to any of them. Thus it is taught. Although this is the case, the root of bearing the burden of the Great Vehicle is great compassion, as stated in the Inexhaustible Intelligence Sutra: Venerable Shariputra's son, the great compassion of the Bodhisattvas is inexhaustible. What is this

Why is that? Because it is the precursor. For example, the venerable Sharadvatiputra, like the breath that goes in and out, is the precursor of the life force of a person. Similarly, the great compassion of a Bodhisattva is the precursor to the perfect accomplishment of the Great Vehicle. Furthermore, in the Holy Dharma Collection Sutra, it says: "Bhagavan, a Bodhisattva does not need to study many dharmas. Bhagavan, if a Bodhisattva holds well and realizes one dharma, then all the Buddha's dharmas are in his hands. What is that one dharma? It is great compassion. Bhagavan, with great compassion, all the Buddha's dharmas are in the palms of the Bodhisattvas' hands. Bhagavan, for example, wherever the precious wheel of a Chakravartin king is, all the armies will be there. Bhagavan, similarly, wherever the great compassion of a Bodhisattva is, all the Buddha's dharmas will be there. Bhagavan, for example, if the life force exists, other faculties will arise. Bhagavan, similarly, if great compassion exists, other dharmas of a Bodhisattva will also arise." Thus, even if one experiences the mind of compassion once, it is easy to transform from everything to everything. Because the dispositions and inclinations of sentient beings are different, and because of evil deeds, it is difficult to do what should be learned, and it is easy to become discouraged, thereby falling into the Lesser Vehicle. As it says in Acharya Ashvaghosa's "The Precious Lamp for Cultivating the True Bodhicitta": "Some people do virtuous deeds, but because they do not understand the meaning of detachment, like the pleasure of a dream, even if they obtain it temporarily, they will lose it again." Therefore, even if one obtains the mind of compassion once, one must generate joy and engage in many efforts to become accustomed to increasing it. Why is that? Because even if the mind of enlightenment arises through being properly guided by others, it is merely obtaining the name of a Bodhisattva, and without needing to strive, by the power of great compassion, one's own
