Separated from the guru and entering emptiness, one cannot thereby attain the supreme path. Even if one only meditates on compassion, one will not be liberated from this cycle of existence. But whoever is able to combine these two, neither dwells in samsara nor dwells in nirvana. As stated in the "Teaching of the Inexhaustible Intelligence," what is the means of a Bodhisattva? What is the manifestation of wisdom? Because when one abides in equanimity, one observes sentient beings, and therefore one's mind is closely placed upon the object of great compassion, that is the means. Because one engages in peace and complete peace, that is wisdom. It is said extensively and in accordance with the chapter on subduing Mara. Having thus identified the characteristics of the path, from what does the method of combining them arise? Although it is thought to arise from four causes, such as seeing the form body of the Buddha, the qualities of the Dharma body, and the perception of the rarity of the Mahayana teachings, here, for beginners, the four immeasurables are first made like a ground-breaker, and then it arises from the two, aspiration and engagement, and from learning the precepts. As it is said in the Intermediate Mother Sutra: "Subhuti, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva should cultivate great love, great compassion, great joy, and great equanimity." Thus it is. In general, the meaning of the word "immeasurable" is shown to have four categories. As the teacher Buddhagupta said: "Thus, focusing on immeasurable sentient beings, and immeasurable accumulations, and immeasurable Dharma, and immeasurable wisdom." The first is that it is impossible to estimate how many sentient beings there are in the three realms. The second is that merit and wisdom are the two causes or essences of generation. The third is the great qualities of the Buddha, such as the ten powers and the fearlessnesses. The fourth is that the knowable and the knowing are inseparable, and thus become the object of the Tathagata's wisdom. The four dharmas, such as love, abide in the essence of those dharmas. In order to explain the object of love, the essence of love is the desire for the happiness of others. Just as a loving mother loves her child, accumulating body, possessions, and all virtues, one should learn to benefit others and endure harm. Among them, love is
