Therefore, not allowing compassion to turn into anger, and the opposite towards other beings, is miserliness disguised as compassion. Rejoicing in the perfection of oneself and one's own side, and in happiness and well-being, and the opposite of this during meditation, etc., is close to arrogance or jealousy. For feelings, neither prophetic nor harmful realms, the equanimity of not understanding is associated with the side of ignorance. These are the causes that manifest in conditioned existence, and are unrelated to the path of liberation. The Teacher, the Great Compassionate One, said in the Excellent Essence Sutra: "Shariputra, here, without properly generating the mind, the four—love, compassion, joy, and equanimity—that are not subsequently generated are the four abodes of Brahma, accompanied by manifest conditioned existence. Properly generating the mind, the four—love, compassion, joy, and equanimity—that are subsequently generated are the four immeasurables, because they tend towards the path of transcending suffering." So it is said. The four abodes of Brahma, which are other than the four immeasurables that are not grasped by the mind of liberation, are not without temporary results. In the past, when a woman was carrying a child across the Ganges River, both died because they could not bear the love for each other, and it is said that they attained the state of Brahma. As Master Shantideva said: "What result is born from a single clear mind? Like Brahma and so on, that is it." So it is said. Therefore, love for parents and children, etc., is attachment. Similarly, compassion, etc., tormented by other afflictions, is also as stated in the Ornament of the Sutras: "Being associated with the attachment of desire, it touches many faults." Likewise, being born in the desire realm is the attachment of desire, or being born in the two upper realms is the cause of the attachment of existence. As stated in the Treasury of Knowledge: "Born from the two realms, existence, light, attachment." As indicated, the other three also cannot transcend the cause of samsara, because the Bodhisattva's attachment to sentient beings is the opposite of this. Thus, if even the transcendent four immeasurables are not present in the Hearers, Solitary Realizers, etc., what need is there to mention the assembly of ordinary beings? As stated in the Ornament of the Sutras: "The worldly Bodhi, the self-Buddha, even the Arhats do not have that love, let alone others."

What need is there to say? How could it not be beyond the world? So it is said. Then, what is related to the path that transcends the world? Here, the path of peace is related to it. The object of focus is all sentient beings. From the manner of meditation that becomes powerful from the nature of phenomena that appears but has no inherent existence, it becomes the cause for the arising of two bodhicittas. Therefore, it is considered to be the four immeasurables with special characteristics. Thus, although the aspect of the object appears as the four, such as love without partiality towards all sentient beings, it is the nature of phenomena that appears but has no inherent existence, like an illusion, that is the cause for the arising of two bodhicittas, reversing from the characteristics of clinging to truth and viewing as real. The Bhagavan said that enlightenment is the nature of space. Therefore, after seeing one's own mind as it truly is, one focuses on the minds of all sentient beings through skillful means. So it is said. In the "Precious Lamp on Meditating on the Ultimate Bodhicitta" by the Teacher Hero, it says: How the phenomena that appear and are heard, are not established and true as such. Because they change in various ways, like the forms of a magic trick. Without essence, like the sky, because they arise only from interdependence. They are also not completely non-existent, like cause and effect in a dream. Truth is not established, falsehood does not revert. So it is said. Such four immeasurables also do not have a fixed order of meditation. Focus on the object that is easy to arise. The usual explanation is that there is a fixed order. In the Intermediate Mother, it says: Subhuti, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva should meditate on great love, great compassion, great joy, and great equanimity. So it is said. In the mantra, it is also said in the Two Examinations Tantra, combining with the suchness of the deity: First, one should meditate on love. Second, one should meditate on compassion. Third, one should meditate on joy. And at the end of all is equanimity. So it is said. That which is not fixed is that following the Ornament of the Middle Way, etc., there is also a sequence of first issuing equanimity, focusing on the object that is easy to arise. First, eliminate attachment and anger towards all sentient beings, and make the mind equal.
