So! In short, the cause of the discipline of guarding against misdeeds is solely guarding the senses. It is said in the sutras that its obstacle is an unwholesome friend. For example, lack of faith, lack of shame, lack of embarrassment, laziness, perverted wisdom, not guarding the senses, overeating, not knowing the measure of food, not striving to sleep in the upper and lower parts of the night, recalling past laughter, speech, joy, and affection, not striving for virtuous Dharma, not respecting or loving elderly monks, improper attention, speaking harsh words, impatience, delighting in work, speech, and socializing, associating with householders, repeatedly looking at women, anger, and holding grudges, etc., are also obstacles to discipline. Therefore, with completely pure discipline, one should truly cultivate the main qualities of the complete limb of samadhi. There are twelve aspects to it: dwelling in a secluded place, dwelling in a refuse heap, begging for alms, eating in one sitting, sitting upright, not accepting food offered later, possessing three Dharma robes, wearing felt, sitting wherever one is, dwelling in a cemetery, dwelling under a tree, and having no shelter. Among these, dwelling in a secluded place is a place that accords with one's vows. As stated in 'Indicating the Good Path': 'Even if one falls asleep in a secluded place, residing in solitude pleases the Sugata. Even if one remains very focused in a city, one cannot easily protect samadhi there.' It is like that. Dwelling in a refuse heap is reviled by worldly people, so it is easy to obtain, content, detached from desire, and one will not degenerate from the Dharma due to actions such as associating with householders for the sake of clothing. Begging for alms: because one possesses the conduct of a mendicant ascetic, one abandons the faults of wrong livelihood and arrogance, and is despised.

Endowed with the merit of patience. The one who sits on one seat means not eating again and again. If one has eaten and has not risen from that seat, one does not take the water for washing the bowl and eat again. Having obtained various foods, not eating again after eating the food of the elements is the end of food. So it is said. The one who sits upright means not sitting leaning on the bedding, but sitting in the lotus position, with the body upright. The former says: Because the vow goes first, this state of sitting abandoning leaning is present, so it is the one who sits upright. So it is said. Not accepting food sent later, as it says: Abandoning eating from outside. By the one who has taken the vow, there is no greed and contentment, and it is in accordance with the manner of faith. So it is. The one with three Dharma robes means having the state of wearing the three Dharma robes of the monastic skirt, upper robe, and lower robe, so it is the one with three Dharma robes. The one who wears felt, for wool that has not been woven, is known in the world as felt, wearing it indicates having contentment. The one who dwells as it is, not being satisfied with the bedding found wherever it is, not being attached to good bedding, and dwelling as it is. The one who dwells in the charnel ground, in order to generate renunciation and protect against carelessness, dwells in any charnel ground where there is no fear. The one who dwells under a tree, abandoning sheltered places, dwells under a tree, having the awareness of impermanence from the changes of the four seasons. The one without a covering means not dwelling in houses or other covered places, but dwelling where the light and images of the sun, moon, and stars are not obscured. Having practiced in this way, having fully received these qualities, one should not praise oneself, slander others, and should not follow the path of non-Dharma. Now, in order to show the incidental, suggestive, and compatible Dharma, apart from the seventeen defeats, the situations where unsuitable enjoyments are blessed are: if it is necessary to eat food at an inappropriate time, one should be happy in a place where the sound is unpleasant; similarly, for bathing, a sick person may have extra clothes, or may wear unsuitable white clothes, or for those who are poor and suffering from leather, etc., it is allowed for the sake of protecting life. One may think that it is allowed to touch jewels to offer to the Rare and Supreme Ones, or to protect sentient beings. Not allowed.
