Because this is related to special circumstances, in order to protect the dwelling in the central region, only leather shoes are allowed; if there is no cushion in a non-monastery house, one can only sit on leather, but lying down is not allowed. However, in remote areas, both shoes and cushions are allowed to protect against the cold. However, patterned, gold and silver decorated, noisy leather shoes, and leather from elephants, tigers, leopards, horses, donkeys, etc., are all considered ornaments and should not be carried. However, just as leather clothing is allowed in the Asmapatanta region, hats and high boots are also allowed in areas where water freezes into ice. Regarding the basis of medicine: When the Teacher was residing in Shravasti, the monks became emaciated due to autumn diseases, so they were allowed to take medicine. Among them, there are detailed distinctions of suitable times, suitable dosages, seven-day medicine, lifetime medicine, etc. In terms of meaning, the main thing is to allow the use of blessed and enjoyable medicines to treat accumulated diseases, and there is nothing else besides that. Therefore, it is allowed to set up a room for placing medicine, called "Rungal," because raw boiling, oil refining, and other activities can be carried out there. The meaning of "Rungal" is a suitable room. The sutra says: "Medicines that have been blessed and are suitable for cooking and storing are no different from the outside." Therefore, there are four ways to bless "Rungal": First, laying bricks; second, the entire process from the beginning of construction to completion; third, praying and blessing after completion; fourth, performing temporary blessings. The latter two also apply to converting old houses into "Rungal." Regarding the basis of dwellings: In Varanasi, the householder De-Zang requested the Teacher to build a monastery, and the Teacher agreed. The Teacher said: "A monastery should be built. A toilet should be built in the center of one side. In front of the toilet is the gatehouse. A square shape is the best." And so on. After the construction is completed, ask whether Vajrapani should be painted on the door, and whether a five-spoke wheel should be painted in the gatehouse, and so on. Also, do not abandon the monastery. One must strive to maintain and reside in it, and strive to abide by the code of conduct.

Thus and so forth, the sutra that extensively explains how to practice giving and prohibiting with regard to the bases of the causes of peaceful dwelling is definitely here. For those who have renounced with the thought of nirvana and possess morality, a hundred thousand garments, a hundred flavors of food, and a five-hundred-story building are also suitable. The property of the Sangha is also suitable. It is suitable for those below the level of non-learners. It is also suitable for ordinary beings. It is not suitable for those who have broken their vows. As it is said. Those who have reached the ultimate in learning are fields of merit, so they do not dwell on the path of giving and prohibition. Noble learners can enjoy the gifts of others because they are able to cultivate the qualities of that and that. Even if they are ordinary beings, if they are pure in their vows and diligent in reading, there is no fault because the Teacher has allowed it. If only the vows are pure, but their minds are destroyed by laziness, and they do not have the practice of hearing, thinking, and meditating, then it is like the debt of a poor person, which must be repaid later. Those who break their vows are always forbidden to use the offerings of faith, and if they use them, they will experience the suffering of the lower realms. In the Sutra of the Buddha's Treasury, it is said: Shariputra, A monk who has broken his vows must cut off his own flesh and pay it to the benefactor for hundreds of thousands of trillions of kalpas. Even if he is born as a livestock, he will have to carry heavy loads. If he cannot digest even a fraction of a hair divided into hundreds of thousands, what need is there to mention clothes, food, bedding, and medicine? And it is said: Shariputra, I cannot practice according to my rituals in a place full of pus and blood, let alone dwell with a monk who has broken his vows. Why is that? Everything taken by the hand of a monk who has broken his vows becomes a poison for a monk who keeps his vows. Thus, the god of Saga also said: Non-learners use it as a master, learners use what is given, those who have meditation and reading, use it with permission, there is no fault. Those who are destroyed by laziness, use it like a debt. For those who break their vows, the use of monasteries and other necessities is always forbidden. So it is said. The basis of actions that pervade everything, etc., is known elsewhere.
