Even if killing, all monks who participate in the killing plan will commit Pārājika. As stated in the Abhidharmakośa, "For the sake of war and other identical purposes, all participants are like the principal offender." The fourth Pārājika offense is lying. The origin is that five hundred fishermen in Vaishali, after being ordained, falsely claimed to have attained superior human qualities, and thus the rule was established. The object of the speech is one who possesses five characteristics of human speech, namely: being able to speak, being able to understand meaning, having consciousness naturally present, being neither male nor female, and not being hermaphroditic. The content of the speech is any worldly or transcendental quality from the first dhyana above the desire realm up to Buddhahood. For example, in terms of worldly dharma, regarding the forms of humans and non-humans, such as gods and nāgas, and the thirteen types of beings, claiming to have seen them without actually seeing them, claiming to have heard them without actually hearing them, saying that they came to see me, and the four types of deceptions such as conversing with them; being in the same boat with these four types of people; claiming that they saw me, that I heard the sound, that they came to see me, and the four situations such as they conversed with me, totaling eight; in terms of transcendental dharma, claiming to be a stream-enterer without having attained the path of seeing of a śrāvaka, claiming to have attained a once-returner without having only one life left in the desire realm, claiming to be a non-returner without having exhausted the afflictions of the desire realm, claiming to have attained an arhat without having abandoned the objects to be abandoned of the peak of existence, claiming to be a pratyekabuddha without having attained the fruit by relying on the twelve links of dependent origination, and claiming to have attained the qualities of a noble one without having actually attained them, and so on. The thought is to change the concept, having the intention to lie. The action is to falsely claim to possess superior qualities such as supernormal powers, even though one does not actually possess them. It must be one's own, related to oneself, without error, clear, and directly spoken. With language possessing these six characteristics, without arrogantly claiming to have attained superior human qualities, or agreeing with others in a compliant manner.

When one starts by rejoicing on the ground, it ultimately becomes a defeat if others understand it that way. The four situations just mentioned, no matter where they are applied, if the respective causes and conditions or all the limbs are not complete, it is a gross offense, and if complete, it becomes a defeat. Similarly, taking killing as an example, if one kills non-human beings, it is a gross offense in the form of a real event; if one kills a livestock being with a name, it is an accomplice to defeat, or an act similar to defeat. Going to war is an accomplice. Killing an emanation or an image is a blameworthy misdeed. Regarding ungiven taking, if one takes what is owned by non-humans, it is a gross offense similar to defeat. During the act of stealing, if the thought of stealing arises, it is a misdeed to be confessed. Taking back what has been given, hiding for the sake of laughter, and sitting on a seat without being asked are blameworthy misdeeds. Regarding non-celibacy, ejaculating with lustful thoughts, touching women, speaking obscene words, acting as a matchmaker, etc., are accomplices, or misdeeds similar to the real event of defeat. Pleasure arising from improper attention, and pleasure arising from the imprints of dreams, etc., are to be restrained. Regarding lying, all slander and complaining are misdeeds similar to defeat. Hinting and relying on a slight fabrication to accuse, etc., are blameworthy misdeeds, which are common to novices. The thirteen Sangha remnants are from the words of showing the good path. If this offense occurs, bedding and food, etc., are used as remnants after the elder, middle, and younger Sangha members, so they are Sangha remnants. As such, the remainder of pure discipline still remains in his continuum, and relying on the Sangha, any offenses that violate the precepts, if remedied with the name of remnant, can be purified, but being in the lower rank of the Sangha and using the remnants of food and drink, it is called Sangha remnant. There are also classifications for this: five attachments to inner sentient beings, and two attachments to external resources, that is, seven arising from the side of desire, two arising from harm, and four arising from exhortation, totaling thirteen. The first is the Sangha remnant of expulsion, the origin of which is in Shravasti, established in Charka.
