There are also those that arise from conceptual thoughts, with one regarding as an enemy and the other possessing a mind of loving-kindness, like the Blessed One and a monk, like a good star. If one must regard as an enemy based on having been harmed directly or indirectly, then there is no end to the harm that relatives have also inflicted in previous lives. Even now, relying on relatives causes oneself suffering, so one dislikes and torments them, or quarrels due to bad behavior, or retaliates without gratitude, and so on, manifestly generating various forms of attachment and aversion, existing in reality like an enemy. If one regards as a friend because of bestowing benefit, then even the current enemy has sometimes been a parent in a previous life, sometimes a relative or friend, sometimes relieved poverty, sometimes saved from death, possessing great kindness. Therefore, the conceptual thought of the enemy of the moment and regarding as an enemy is merely hatred and division caused by small reasons of both sides being unskilled in means. In general, the great bias towards enemies and friends is like grasping the branch of an old tree, it is the sole cause of one's own downfall and the destruction of others. There is no burden heavier than attachment and aversion in the mind, therefore, there is immeasurable happiness for a person who maintains equanimity in feeling. Especially these beings who have little learning and possess pride, are accustomed to ignorance, their mindfulness is not stable, and they are completely not self-controlled, therefore, abandoning the conceptual thought of the enemy towards them, if one associates with them skillfully, then closeness and friendliness will also manifest. Both enemies and friends should be kept in equanimity in the middle nature, just as one is happy when oneself is happy, one is happy when they are happy. Just as one does not want suffering for oneself, they also do not want suffering. Although they desire happiness, they engage in non-virtuous actions that are the cause of suffering, one should equally bestow help on them in terms of Dharma and material things, cultivate this from the depths of one's heart, and at the same time pray that these beings, whose minds are burning the trees of virtue with the fierce flames of attachment and aversion, may be pacified, that there may be no anger towards each other, and that they may be capable of the great mind of equanimity, one should make great aspirations. The Vinaya says: To repay kindness
