One should strive to generate great compassion, which is easy to arise. Having become accustomed to it, one should gradually focus on all sentient beings. Relying on such focused compassion, one can bear the burden of the intention to benefit others. For example, when the black antelope is chased by a hunter, it fears that small creatures in its escape path will be crushed under its hooves, so it blows them away with its nose as it flees. This is the result of the power of compassion becoming stronger through practice. If one's mindstream is not tamed in this way, one will mistake love mixed with desire for compassion. Partial love is also present in crows and wolves, as they cherish and protect their own offspring. Therefore, in the Eight Thousand Verse Prajnaparamita Sutra, it is said: "The vast mind endowed with great compassion, the vast mind that is definite, is to be cultivated as something uncommon to all Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas." As it is said, although these sentient beings are immersed in the blazing flames of suffering, they do not know the means to escape from it. They are entangled by hundreds of afflictions such as desire, and although some are tormented by various kinds of evil views, encountering a qualified guide and teacher is as rare as the Udumbara flower. Even if one encounters a virtuous friend, one is obstructed by one's own evil karma and various adverse conditions, so it is extremely difficult to truly walk the path of liberation. Therefore, since none of these beings who are still wandering in endless samsara and tossed about by the waves of suffering like an ocean have not been my parents and relatives in the past, and since they have been abandoned by protectors and lords, and are knowingly entering the wrong path, may I deliver them from this! May they be liberated from suffering and constantly enjoy immeasurable happiness! Thinking in this way from the depths of one's heart, at that time, the burden of what happens to others falls upon oneself, causing tears to flow and goosebumps to rise, and unbearable compassion arises. Engaging in actions that actually benefit others, such as saving the lives of others through body, speech, and wealth, and eliminating poverty, is the sign of compassion entering the path equally. If one is harming sentient beings in both thought and action, but only verbally

Merely accumulating a billion bodhicitta aspirations with words is like a talking parrot. Therefore, learning to connect the essence of loving-kindness and compassion with a target to emptiness is the unerring path to omniscience, as it says in Nāgārjuna's Stages of Meditation: These dharmas without essence, All arise from conception. Whatever is conceived is also emptiness, Thus, emptiness is liberation. As it is said. Thus, great compassion is the unerring cause of perfect Buddhahood, as it says in the sutra: Whoever has a head has life. Whoever has compassion has bodhicitta. Whoever has bodhicitta has a Buddha. So it is said. Although this is so, compassion that is connected and uninterrupted with the discrimination of near and far, enemy and friend, is its very opposite. For those who easily generate compassion for the object of equanimity, if they see that those of unruly character experience manifest suffering, they regard them with hatred, saying that they are not objects of compassion. If this is the case, the cause and effect of generating compassion will be destroyed. Even if those sentient beings who fall into hell are seen to be creating the cause for falling into hell, how can they be objects of generating compassion? Because they did not fall there by chance. Therefore, one should generate enthusiasm for the benefits of compassion and train the mind in impartial compassion. By training in this way, the mind will become workable, free from harmful thoughts and attachment and aversion. From the Supreme Essence: Great compassion makes the mind workable, harmless, and obtains the supreme adorned with joy. So it is said. In order to explain the object and aspect of joy, the nature of joy is to rejoice in the perfection of other qualities, to generate a joyful mind, and to cultivate good wishes for all beings. Rejoicing in what they have attained by their own power, and wishing that they will not be separated from it in the future. There are three divisions of this. In the Extensive Explanation of the Four Immeasurables, it says: Joy is to rejoice that those sentient beings have the perfection of wealth, the perfection of Dharma, and the perfection of happiness. Joy that focuses on the completion of one's own collection of merit is that one possesses a collection of merit.
