The compassion towards sentient beings is to dispel the suffering of these sentient beings tormented by three or eight kinds of suffering with great compassion; the compassion towards sinful sentient beings is to dispel all the roots of non-virtue of those sentient beings who engage in non-virtue, which is the cause of those three or eight kinds of suffering, with compassion; the compassion towards sentient beings who are not liberated due to the lack of conditions is to benefit those sentient beings who have not met virtuous friends, have not heard the Dharma, and do not understand what to accept and reject, and liberate them with compassion. Among these three, the first is the entrance for beginners, that is, aiming to free sentient beings from suffering and taking on their burden. If one does not take on the burden, but only thinks that it would be good if sentient beings were free from suffering, and rejoices when encountering happiness, such love and compassion are also present in Hearers and Solitary Realizers, so here one must generate a higher intention distinguished by courage, because that is the characteristic of the Great Vehicle. As asked by Blo-gros rGya-mtsho: Blo-gros rGya-mtsho, for example, a merchant or householder has only one son, who is lovely, dear, pitiable, pleasing, and never displeasing to see, and that child falls into a pit of filth while playing. Then, the child's mother and relatives see the child fall into the pit of filth, and after seeing it, they cry out loudly, grieve and wail, but do not enter the pit of filth to rescue the child. Then, the child's father goes in that direction and sees his only son fall into the pit of filth. After seeing it, with a swift and urgent attitude, he desires to rescue his only son, and without disgust, he descends into the pit of filth and rescues his only son. The pit of filth is a metaphor for the three realms, the only son is a metaphor for sentient beings, and the mother and relatives are a metaphor for the Hearers and Solitary Realizers who wail at the edge of the pit but cannot enter, they have near compassion, but cannot eliminate the suffering of sentient beings, while the Bodhisattva's compassion

Compassion is like his father, acting with altruism, disregarding his own safety for the sake of others. Therefore, since we have entered the Mahayana path, we should view it this way: all sentient beings are like blind people wandering in a desolate and terrifying wilderness. They have lost the eyes to distinguish between what to take and what to abandon, they have no virtuous teacher to guide them, no food and drink of generosity, they have lost the escort of discipline, the dam of patience has collapsed, the steps of diligence are disordered, they are far from the resting place of meditation, and they have been abandoned by the staff of wisdom. Some are being boiled and burned in the great hells, some are starving and suffering in the city of pretas (hungry ghosts), some are suffering and experiencing in the animal realm, some are fighting and arguing in the realm of asuras (demigods), some are falling and declining from the city of devas (gods), and some are experiencing the suffering of birth, old age, sickness, and death in the human realm. Like this, all six realms of beings have not been liberated from suffering, they follow karma, are tormented by intense afflictions, and are accompanied by the fear of the lower realms, directly or indirectly. Some may appear happy and prosperous now, but in reality, they are creating the causes of suffering, delighting in non-virtuous actions. Some are experiencing the results of suffering, being tormented and afflicted by the lower realms and so on. Therefore, by correctly observing the present behavior and future consequences of all sentient beings as vast as the sky, the root of compassion will surely manifest. However, they do not see the causal relationship between the desire to be free from suffering and the desire to attain happiness. Loving-kindness is the mind without hatred, and compassion is the mind without attachment, therefore, these two are confused in terms of arising, what is produced, and cause and effect. Here, for a beginner, one should first focus attention on animals caught by hunters, livestock taken to the slaughterhouse, people imprisoned in dungeons, those afflicted by leprosy, those afflicted by poverty, blind people without friends, and creatures without protection, and so on, in short, those who are tormented by extremely heavy suffering.
