It is said in the scriptures: Venerable Śāradvatīputra! The great compassion of the Bodhisattvas is inexhaustible. Why is that? Because it is the precursor. Venerable Śāradvatīputra! For example, the inhalation and exhalation of breath is the precursor to the life force of a person. Similarly, the great compassion of the Bodhisattva is the precursor to the perfect accomplishment of the Great Vehicle. Furthermore, in the Holy "Collection of True Dharmas": "Bhagavan! Bodhisattvas do not need to study many dharmas. Bhagavan! If a Bodhisattva well holds and realizes one dharma, all the Buddha's dharmas are in his hands. What is that one dharma? It is great compassion. Bhagavan! Great compassion places all the Buddha's dharmas in the palms of the Bodhisattvas. Bhagavan! For example, wherever the precious wheel of a Chakravartin king is, there is the assembly of the army. Bhagavan! Similarly, wherever the great compassion of a Bodhisattva is, there are all the Buddha's dharmas. Bhagavan! For example, if the life force exists, the other faculties will arise. Bhagavan! Similarly, if great compassion exists, the other dharmas of the Bodhisattva will also arise." Thus, even experiencing the mind of compassion once makes it easy to completely transform in every way. Because the realms and inclinations of sentient beings are different, and their actions are evil, there are many difficulties and frustrations in what should be learned, and therefore there is a falling into the Lesser Vehicle. The master Aśvaghoṣa's "Lamp for the Precious Cultivation of the True Bodhicitta" says: Some do virtuous deeds, But do not understand the meaning of liberation, Like the pleasure of a dream, Though temporarily obtained, it will again be lost. Therefore, even for once obtaining the mind of compassion, one should generate joy and strive with various methods to gradually increase it. Why? Because the mind of enlightenment can arise even through being properly guided by others,

Merely obtaining the name of a Bodhisattva, but without needing to strive, through the power of great compassion, one's own mind is overwhelmed, and from this arises the mind of Bodhi, which is especially excellent, as the Bhagavan declared from the Samadhi of the Tathagata's Wisdom Hand Seal. Therefore, the teacher Hero said: Your heart is a jewel, it is the seed of perfect Bodhi, Hero, you alone know its essence, others cannot fathom it. As it is said. Thus, a person who possesses great compassion in their being, the way to train in the object of loving-kindness is: oneself, first born from the suffering of birth, just born, the senses awaken to objects, even the subtle feelings of pleasure and pain are experienced, but one does not know what to accept or reject. A body like a worm, covered in unclean filth, with an unpleasant odor, is taken into the mother's lap, bathed and cleaned, warmed with the warmth of the body, nourished with milk, looked at with loving eyes, the unclean is discarded by hand, harm is endured, even inconsistent behavior is regarded as beloved in the heart. Fearing death when grown up, fearing illness in middle age, fearing hunger when young, fearing thirst, fearing cold, thus abandoning unfavorable conditions, seeking favorable conditions, and raising them to adulthood. Giving all possessions, abandoning forgetfulness of affection, for the sake of the child, disregarding sin, suffering, and bad reputation, even disregarding body and life. If one knows such kindness and does not repay it, who would do that? As it is said in the Compendium of Training: A child in the lap can do nothing, who sucks milk with the force of loving-kindness? Serving with much labor, serving with loving-kindness, who would easily abandon one who is extremely base? In whose womb this is found and dwells, who has taken this with a loving heart, abandoning those afflictions, suffering, and helplessness, who would easily abandon an extremely base being? As it is said, we were first born with the appearance of a human, without the consciousness of a man, weak in ability and power, without a speaking tongue and skillful hands, like a worm emerging from a dry shell.
