Having accumulated all the goodness of body and possessions, train in benefiting others and enduring harm. Among these, loving-kindness is when a Bodhisattva, abiding in the four parts of ascertainment on the ground of practice with faith and aspiration, in the realm of their direct perception through clairvoyance, sees gods, humans, and so forth, as well as sentient beings in the evil realms suffering torment in those places, and unbearable great compassion arises for them. Furthermore, knowing that these beings and oneself have been wandering in samsara since beginningless time, and that there is no one who has not been a relative or friend, due to this cause, a mind like the love for an only child arises as the nature of loving-kindness. Manifesting the means to liberate them from suffering and establish them in happiness, and making aspirations for that purpose, this is called loving-kindness focused on sentient beings. Bodhisattvas from the attainment of the first ground up to the seventh ground think, 'All phenomena are without inherent existence, but sentient beings, clinging to things as real, do not realize this and thus wander in the three realms, experiencing the cause and effect of suffering. How sad! May I benefit them with the Dharma and may they realize the nature of reality.' Making aspirations in this way, loving-kindness arises towards sentient beings through directly realizing the suchness of Dharma, and thus it is called loving-kindness focused on Dharma. Bodhisattvas from the eighth ground onwards, up to the attainment of Buddhahood, are said to be without focus, spontaneously and effortlessly generating loving-kindness towards the realm of sentient beings and benefiting them. For example, like a wish-fulfilling jewel or a wish-fulfilling tree, although there is no conceptual thought, they benefit sentient beings as requested. Due to the power of the previous aspirations of the Buddhas, great compassion naturally and spontaneously arises towards the realm of sentient beings, and thus it is called loving-kindness without focus. Regarding these, the Bodhisattva Grounds states: 'Focusing on sentient beings is common to non-Buddhists. Focusing on Dharma is common to all Hearers and Solitary Realizers. Being without focus is not common to any of them.' Thus it is taught. Although this is so, the root of bearing the burden of the Great Vehicle is great compassion, because of inexhaustible wisdom...
