In the Ornament (Mahāyānālaṃkāra), it says: If even those Arhats who attain enlightenment and become Pratyekabuddhas do not have that loving-kindness, what need is there to mention others? How could it not change if it were not beyond the world? Therefore, what is associated with the path that transcends the world? This is associated with the path of peace. The object of focus is all sentient beings. From the power of the method of meditating on the nature of phenomena, which appears but is without inherent existence, arises the cause for the generation of the two Bodhicittas. Therefore, it is considered to be the four immeasurables with special characteristics. In this way, although the aspect of the object appears as the four, such as loving-kindness without hostility towards all sentient beings, the recognition that it is the nature of phenomena that appears but is without inherent existence, like an illusion, which is the opposite of the characteristic of clinging to truth and viewing it as a real thing, is the cause for the generation of the two Bodhicittas. The Blessed One said that enlightenment is because of the nature of space. Therefore, after seeing one's own mind as it truly is, one can then focus on the minds of all sentient beings through skillful means. As the teacher Hero says in "The Precious Lamp for Meditating on the Ultimate Bodhicitta": "How phenomena appear and are known, Are not established and true as such. Because they change into various things, Like the appearance of a magical illusion. Devoid of essence, like the sky, Because they arise only from interdependence. They are also not completely non-existent, Like the cause and effect in a dream. Truth is not established, falsehood does not recede." Even these four immeasurables can be meditated upon with or without a specific order. Focus on the object that is easy to generate. The detailed explanation in order is that there is a definite order. In the Intermediate Mother Sutra, it says: "Subhuti, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva should meditate on great loving-kindness, great compassion, great joy, and great equanimity." In the Mantrayana, it is also said in the Two Examinations Tantra, in conjunction with the suchness of the deity: "First, one should meditate on loving-kindness. Second, one should meditate on compassion. Third, one should meditate on joy. Finally, equanimity for all." That which is without a fixed order follows the Ornament of the Middle Way and focuses on what is easy to generate, taking equanimity as the first step.

There is also the need to cultivate equanimity first in order to eliminate attachment and anger towards all sentient beings. As the teacher Hero also said in the 'Mundane Bodhicitta Meditation': 'First, with immeasurable mind, the ground of equanimity is well leveled. Then, with the water of loving-kindness sprinkled in various ways, the yogi with great joy, plants the seed of compassion well.' As it is said, it should be combined with what is easy to arise. The knowledge that can be combined is this: these immeasurable qualities also arise from four conditions, namely, the inherent lineage in the realm of sentient beings is the causal condition. The virtuous friend who demonstrates the measure of the four is the dominant condition. The manifestation of one's own object is the objective condition. The benefit of meditating in this way and the habituation of the faults of not meditating is the immediate condition. As it is said in the Ornament of the Sutras: 'From the nature of happiness and suffering, arises the loving-kindness of the Bodhisattva; from the nature of cause and virtuous friend, arises the compassion of the wise.' In particular, these aspects of the object, which are related like mind and mental factors, are generated by the four conditions, such as the dominant condition, in the time of samsara. The causal condition, the dominant condition, and the immediate condition generate the two kinds of meditative absorption. It is believed that material things are generated from their respective causes and the dominant conditions such as heat and moisture. As it is said in the Abhidharma Kosha: 'Mind and mental factors arise from four, the two kinds of meditative absorption arise from three, and the others arise from these two.' That is to say, as an antidote to the gradual purification and liberation, however, if the cultivation of loving-kindness becomes the basis of attachment, then one should shift to cultivating equanimity that is free from near and far. If the cultivation of loving-kindness is seen as having distinctions like relatives and friends and becomes the basis of attachment, then the cultivation of equanimity becomes its antidote. If that itself is deluded and becomes unspecified, then by shifting to compassion, the cause and effect of suffering can be stopped. If the mind of equanimity falls into an unspecified state of being unhelpful, then by generating great compassion towards the state where sentient beings engage in the cause of suffering and are tormented by the result, that inferior equanimity can be stopped.
