All the thirty-six kinds of generosity that are spoken of are feared by the burden of letters. If one has a little generosity and prides oneself on being virtuous, one finds fault with others for being stingy and lazy in their behavior. This also represents the remaining situations, causing anger in others, thereby going to hell. The Sutra on the Complete Purification of Karmic Obscurations also says: 'When ordinary beings give alms, they do not trust those who are stingy, and that also causes anger and leads to hell, which is an obscuration to generosity. When keeping the precepts, if one speaks ill of those who are immoral, many people will not trust them, and that lack of trust will lead to lower realms. Abiding in patience and so forth, and not praising those who abide in the opposite of these, is an obscuration to morality and so forth.' Therefore, the Lord Nagarjuna said: 'Although I have abundant wealth, I should not despise others, but with a mind like butter, I should hide all qualities within.' These words should also be kept in mind. Furthermore, the generosity of a Bodhisattva is to give to the beggar who is encountered immediately upon obtaining enjoyment. Accumulating a lot and giving it all at once is not only a cause for arrogance and dependence on others, but during that time, due to the constant awareness of guarding and increasing various afflictions such as stinginess, it interrupts many virtuous deeds, and sometimes the act of giving is not completed due to loss in the meantime. In short, the benefits of generosity that do not upset the minds of others, such as not giving quickly and counting favors, are stated in the Chapter on Truthfulness: 'By giving with reverence, relatives and others will treat you with reverence; by giving with your own hands, you will receive reverence; by giving at the right time, things will be accomplished at the right time; by giving without harming others, you will obtain stable possessions; by giving with patience in discomfort, your retinue will be close.' Furthermore, in order to eliminate the faults of people with the stain of stinginess, one should use skillful and gentle speech, and also give a small amount of material goods to encourage them to give alms, and also to those who have no implements.

For those who give the cause of charity, after giving, let the Three Jewels also give. If you do not have property, then accumulate wealth through faultless crafts and various occupations that you have worked hard to engage in the work of charity, and do not become an obstacle to others' charity, nor return those items that have been determined to be given away. Furthermore, it should be understood to distinguish from the perspective of what can and cannot be given. Whatever the thing, if it can immediately be separated from the cause of evil destinies and create a feeling of happiness, and ultimately stop evil and do good; or if it does not bring happiness immediately, but ultimately is a beneficial cause, the Bodhisattva should give it. If the thing given brings happiness immediately, but ultimately causes harm; or if both immediately and ultimately cause suffering, then it should not be given. For example, in the first case, the Bodhisattva gives his own livestock and other animals to others in order to avoid being slaughtered or tortured, etc. Furthermore, if one becomes a king, plundering other people's children and wives to give away; or taking from the property of parents, Sangha, Three Jewels, servants, etc. to give to others; or giving in a way that harms others; or giving things that are not suitable for those who uphold vows; or giving leftover food and drink, etc. Similarly, even if one is motivated by pure compassion, and the time comes to give away one's body and life, one should not give away important parts such as limbs for trivial needs; even if one has sufficient courage to give, but if the other party does not accept the body, and preserving the body is more necessary for accomplishing the benefit of many sentient beings; or if one is coerced by demonic deities and vicious sentient beings possessed by them; or if one is asked by madmen and mentally disturbed people, because they are tormented by their disturbed minds, one should not give to them. If one gives, one will break the precepts. Similarly, one should not give children, wives, servants, etc. to unfriendly people, and Yakshas and Rakshasas, etc., in short, to those who oppress with violence, to those who are ungrateful, and to those who will forget their vows, and
