As some say, some people may have doubts about this. Therefore, material and fearlessness giving precedes the giving of Dharma. As the master Yeshe Nyingpo said: Dharma giving cannot be given to sentient beings who have not been gathered. Among the three types of giving, material and fearlessness are the means of gathering, and Dharma giving is accomplished through these means. Therefore, sentient beings should be gathered through the four objects of gathering: giving, kind speech, beneficial action, and consistency. Among these, the meaning of the first two is easy to understand. Beneficial action refers to the method of how to lead others onto the path, and consistency means that one should also diligently practice the path shown to others. Having gathered in this way through the four objects of gathering, among the three types of Dharma giving, it is difficult to teach truthfully to those who do not have genuine faith and practice. Through the ritual of eliminating one's own afflictions, and through reading the scriptures with love and compassion, plant the aspiration to liberate the lineage of the white side. After one's own lineage is liberated, take benefiting others as the main task in accordance with the connection and nature of beings. As it says in the Sutra of the Prophecy in Response to the Questions of Arya Lokadhara: What is Dharma giving? Giving pens, ink, and books is small. According to each person's capacity, teaching the Dharma of Shravakas, Pratyekabuddhas, and the unsurpassed is great. Leading to the attainment of unsurpassed Bodhi and teaching the Dharma that is inconceivable like the sky is extremely great. In general, the essence of Dharma giving is to teach the sacred Dharma to others. However, for those whose faith and practice are not mature, showing the Dharma to others when the ability to teach in terms of both the words and meaning of the Dharma is not clearly manifest in one's own lineage is like one blind person describing the color to another based on the sound of a swan's wings. Therefore, the prohibition of beginners from engaging in Dharma speaking is stated in the Ten Displays of the Joy of Bodhisattvas: A beginner Bodhisattva should first be devoted to recitation.

One should be encouraged to dwell in solitude after much learning. Having become completely solitary, one should be fully encouraged to become a virtuous friend. Having become a virtuous friend, one should be encouraged to spend one's old age in comfort. Having spent one's old age in comfort, one should be encouraged to know the times. Having known the times, one should be encouraged to be fearless. Having become fearless, one should be encouraged to know the meaning. Having been encouraged to know the meaning, one should be encouraged to follow the Dharma. Having followed the Dharma, one should be encouraged to be without delusion. Having become without delusion, one should be fully encouraged to rejoice. Thus it is said. Therefore, the afflictions of one's own mind-stream should be eliminated by diligently engaging in listening, contemplating, and meditating on the instructions of a virtuous friend, the teachings of the Sugata, and the treatises explained by holy beings, scholars, and accomplished ones. One should have love and compassion for sentient beings. Because of faith in the teachings of the Tathagata, diligently reading the Mahayana scriptures transforms into great benefit for others. Whoever reads, remembers, or recites this sutra, or writes it or causes it to be written, the ripening of that is inconceivable. Thus it is said, generally speaking, and in particular, when Master Vasubandhu recited the sutras, the pigeons who heard it lightened their karma and, having passed away, were reborn as the disciple Uspa, who became the master Lodrö Tenpa Furthermore, there are stories of gods listening from the sky when practitioners abiding in supreme love and compassion recited the scriptures. Similarly, in places where those who previously possessed the mind of enlightenment resided, the mind-streams of the local deities and others became gentle, so that place was complete with auspicious qualities. Even if they did not directly teach the Dharma, merely reciting profound Dharma words and meanings, or even just the act of sprinkling water, has the giving of Dharma, which makes their mind-streams gentle and delighted. Therefore, one should aim to eliminate the karma and afflictions of all sentient beings, and with the mind of enlightenment, recite profound scriptures and focus on the giving of Dharma. And, one should also focus on pens, ink, and books.
