The means of practicing generosity. After becoming accustomed to this, gradually, one will even give away one's own flesh. When one develops the thought that one's own body is like vegetables, etc., then what difficulty is there in giving away flesh, etc.? So it is said. There is nothing that does not become easy after becoming accustomed to it. So it is said. Therefore, when a Bodhisattva is in the stage of learning the path, ascending the platform of generosity, even seeing a beggar from afar, he greets him with his eyes and cultivates joy. Regarding the object of generosity, he thinks: This is the virtuous friend who perfects my perfection of generosity. Looking at it in this way, he thinks: This object and I will definitely be separated, this object will also abandon me, and I will also abandon this object. If I give it away now, I will not suffer from regret in the future, and without attachment, my mind will feel joy. In this way, one should learn the method of destroying greed and attachment through generosity. The Ornament of the Sutras says: Giving away things, the root is in the mind, the body and enjoyment are perfect, the two follow and perfect, also without stinginess, giving away Dharma and fearless wealth, having fully understood such generosity, the wise should practice it correctly. So it is said. The gift of fearlessness is: The gift of fearlessness is protecting the lives of others, rescuing them from fearful situations, and settling them in a place of respite. Among them, the nature of the gift of fearlessness is: placing those who are frightened and panicked by fear in a place where they can take a great breath of relief. For example, being trapped in the king's prison, suffering the torment of punishment, encountering robbers, wild beasts, suffering from hunger and thirst on dangerous roads, wild animals chased by hunters, and those tormented by diseases and demons, etc. In particular, in the situation of samsara, except for the beings in hell, there are hardly any who do not protect their own lives. Therefore, becoming their support and protector is the most excellent conduct of Bodhisattvas. When our teacher became the lord of men and the object of offerings, his territory, due to following wrong views, considered performing large-scale life offerings for the sake of rain. At that time, that king was controlled by great compassion.

Being so, he became very unhappy and thought of a way, saying: "In this way, the fields have been ruined by drought, and the roots and trees of Jambudvipa are withering, and the rivers are drying up. For the sake of rain, other sacrifices are insignificant. From whatever is your own dominion, prepare a sacrifice of life of ten hundred steadfast men," he commanded the ministers. All of them were frightened and terrified, and as if listening to exhortations, they requested to stop the sacrifice of life, and in reality, they gave many beings the refuge of fearlessness. Therefore, bodhisattvas should diligently train in giving, being skilled in means, and employing their own flesh and blood, giving others the state of fearlessness. When training in this way, if one is not able, then frivolous rituals and false giving are also condemned. If the thought of compassion is not very pure, then the Compendium of Trainings forbids giving up body and life. Among them, great giving and exceedingly great giving are the objects of practice of obtaining forbearance of the unborn dharma. As it is said in the Sutra Requested by the Noble Near Attendant: "By abiding in forbearance of the unborn dharma, one should also perform giving, great giving, and supreme giving." Therefore, now that faith has not become strong, and the mind of the beginner is as fragile as the flesh of a wound, unbearable, and those who are very fickle in entering and withdrawing, if they directly engage in the great work of benefiting others without healing their own afflictive diseases, there is a danger that they will become weary of benefiting others and generate the mind of a Hearer or Solitary Realizer. It is like a ship capsizing in the ocean, being unable to endure on land, and a swimmer who has not fully mastered the skill of swimming also endangers himself. Therefore, the Compendium of Trainings explains in detail that even if the body has been given in thought, one should not actually give flesh and blood, etc. The source of this is also from the Sutra of the Noble Akashagarbha, which says: "Desiring at the wrong time is the work of Mara." And also from the Bodhisattvacharyavatara: "Without pure compassion, one should not give up the body, but in whatever way, this and other bodies, should be given as the cause for accomplishing great meaning." Just like that, mouth
