One cannot say there is nothing, and even if others steal from one's own home, one should especially cultivate joy. When that person becomes poor, one should give alms from the price of selling grass, and one should learn to give like the deceased king who built a house of continuous offerings and gave alms. In the sutra, it says: "Giving material things perfects the accumulation of merit, and giving the Dharma perfects the accumulation of wisdom. These two should be accomplished in every way." What is the giving of material things? For example, giving, great giving, and extreme giving. Giving is giving food, clothing, elephants, etc. to others. So it is said. The object of giving should not be thought of as the field of merit being good and the afflicted being the opposite, because this hinders the realization of the equality of Dharma-nature. In particular, giving with compassion to an inferior object is the custom of the Great Vehicle. As it says in the sutra: "The mind should be equal and impartial to all sentient beings, without discrimination." If one thinks that the Three Jewels are my field of merit and animals and so on are not, then the Bodhisattva will not realize the equality of Dharma-nature. Therefore, the Three Jewels and the Lama are good fields for giving, while animals and so on are not, like planting seeds in salty soil. If you think like this, it will not become the Dharma of a Bodhisattva. So it is said. However, choosing the object of giving refers to those who are dull-witted, beginners, whose minds have not been tamed, and who are not accustomed to compassion. As it says in the Sutra Requested by the Elder: "There are five kinds of unsurpassed giving: the Tathagata, the Sangha, the Dharma speaker, the sick, and the parents." And also: "Even if they are not noble, to parents, the sick, the Dharma speaker, and the Bodhisattva who is the last of births, the offering is said to be immeasurable." So it is. Therefore, even if the object of giving is small, if there is no expectation of ripening and fruit, it will become a true field of merit. Even if the object is vast, if it is mixed with the motivation of the five desires, the resulting fruit is uncertain.

From the Tenth Wheel of the Earth Store Sutra: It is for the benefit and happiness of all sentient beings, not for the sake of a ripening result. Even a small offering becomes a true field of merit. Even if many things are given in charity, if one dwells in the five desires and is not sealed with the hand of the noble ones, it will become an accumulation of uncertainty. So it is said. Great giving is said in the sutra: What is called great giving is giving away sons, daughters, and family. As it is said, like a king who competes with everyone in giving, jealous of how other kings demand things, while he himself has no definite benefit, he becomes greedy and deceitful. Therefore, all the sons, daughters, and possessions of the giver are demanded. Even though they are very attached to those things, feeling the pain as if their hearts were breaking, they do not turn away from the mind of giving, but give with a heart of no regret. Like this, we should repeatedly contemplate such courage and benefit, feel great shame for our own stinginess and miserliness, and get used to making vows. As it is said in the Compendium of Perfections: Remembering the supreme conduct of the Buddhas, contemplating the self-vow that follows it, in order to completely eliminate attachment, one should contemplate these supreme thoughts in the mind. So it is said. The extreme giving in the place of extreme difficulty is giving away the head and limbs. As it is said in the sutra: What is called extreme giving is extremely difficult to do, giving away the head, eyes, hands, feet, and so on. So it is said. When our teacher became the Earth-Moving Power (a Bodhisattva's name), he was begged by a beggar with a broken waist, even begging for an axe. He accumulated many carpenter's tools, sawed off his own waist with a sharp saw, and gave it away. When he became King Moonlight, he cut off his own head and gave it to a fierce Brahmin. When the Earth-Moving Power became the Void, he accepted all three kinds of giving: giving, great giving, and extreme giving. In the later giving, his own body's blood surged like waves, and the pain of being touched by weapons was extremely difficult to endure, even for hundreds of years.
