Loss of intention, committing a root downfall, and abandoning the precepts are categorized into three. The twenty root downfalls are intended for those who clearly understand the boundaries of downfalls and are mostly accustomed to and stable in them. Apart from that, for beginners and others, one should strive to increase their wisdom and make them accustomed to the teachings. For example, for beginners, even if they are not capable, they should be shown the practice of guiding, etc. This shows that the Buddha's discipline is skilled in using skillful means to enhance the power of wisdom. Otherwise, actions unrelated to time are also said to be downfalls. However, from the aspect of intention, one should be fearful of the faults of breaking vows, be remorseful, confess, and strive as much as possible. If one does not strive in this way, then the precepts established by the teacher will become meaningless. The fault of abandoning is being far from enlightenment and experiencing endless suffering in samsara and the lower realms. The fault of root downfalls is stated in the Compendium of Trainings: "These are root downfalls, the cause for beings to fall into the great scorching hell." Similarly, regarding abandoning the precepts, if one cannot keep the Pratimoksha vows, it is allowed to abandon them. Even so, there are four situations to examine when abandoning vows, but if one abandons the Bodhisattva vows, the fault is very serious. In general, this not only cuts off the sole cause for accomplishing the benefit and happiness of oneself and others, but also abandons the vow made until the essence of enlightenment. As stated in the Bodhicharyavatara: "Having invited supreme bliss with sincere intention, yet deceiving all beings, how can one go to a place of bliss?" Because he has deceived all beings, he has no basis for going to a place of bliss. Having understood these reasons, even if one has already strived, the teacher Asanga also said: "Not understanding, being careless, having many afflictions, and being disrespectful are the four doors through which downfalls arise." Due to these reasons, in the Sutra Requested by Upali, it is said: "Upali, if a Bodhisattva who has entered the Great Vehicle commits a downfall in the morning, then for half a day, he will not be separated from the mind of all-knowing wisdom." The same applies to all situations. If half of the

If one confesses in time, even in the time of outer distraction, if a transgression occurs in the time of outer distraction, one should confess at dusk. If a transgression occurs at dusk, one should confess at midnight. If a transgression occurs at midnight, one should confess at dawn, and so on. O Near One, if that is the case, then the precepts of the Bodhisattvas who have truly entered the Great Vehicle can be remedied. As it is said, if one arrives with an antidote at the end of each of the six parts divided into three parts each of day and night, then his morality will not be interrupted. However, if one generates the thought of abandoning, thinking that one cannot attain Buddhahood for the sake of others, then one abandons it immediately, regardless of the time. Therefore, for others, if one arrives with regret within the time, then that is merely a cause of decline. The measure of that confession is: for example, if a transgression occurs in the morning, at any of the beginning, middle, or end of the first of the six parts, then immediately within the scope of the second of the six parts, one can recover by confessing with strong regret in various ways. Thus, if one does not exceed the measure of confession, even if one repeatedly commits root transgressions, it can be remedied. If one exceeds the measure of confession, it is called transgression, because it is not recovered through remedy. Therefore, confession and restraint should precede, and one must take it again as in the ritual. Although that is so, if one thinks that decline is easy and rebirth is easy, and one takes it lightly, then the ritual of the four powers will decline, and ultimately it will consume the Dharma. The method of how to confess with remedy is: those with inferior faculties have a strong attachment to things, therefore, relying on ten or five people who have shame and embarrassment and hold the Great Vehicle precepts, one should confess without concealing faults and transgressions to one or more people, and thereby rise from the transgression. Those with intermediate faculties who are accustomed to deity yoga and have stable devotion, then from their own sutra, like a fortress of transgressions that cuts off the roots of virtue, like a mirror of disciplined conduct, like clothes of those who know shame and embarrassment, as it is said, one should confess to the noble Akashagarbha, the deity common to all Vidyadharas. Within the uninterrupted boundary of transgressions between day and night, one should only remember faults and transgressions, and have regret. At dawn, one should abide in bathing and cleanliness, and burn incense. Invoke the noble Akashagarbha.
