From this time until the essence of enlightenment is reached, I take refuge in the Buddhas, the supreme among two-legged beings. I take refuge in the holy Dharma, the supreme among the peaceful and free from desire, the main treasure of the Great Vehicle. I take refuge in the Sangha, the supreme among assemblies, the noble Bodhisattvas, the irreversible community. Reciting this three times establishes the basis for vows. As it is said in the "Seventy Verses on Refuge": "All vows are included in refuge, without refuge, there are none." As quoted earlier. In the ritual composed by Jowo, there is a request for each precious one. Then, to hold the mind, manifest great compassion, with the single-pointed thought of wanting to liberate all sentient beings: I beseech all the Buddhas and Bhagavatas residing in the ten directions to consider me. I beseech the Bodhisattvas, the great beings abiding on the ten grounds, to consider me. I beseech the great Vajradhara Lamas to consider me. Just as the Buddhas and Bhagavatas of the past, and the Bodhisattvas, the great beings abiding on the great earth, generated the mind of perfect enlightenment, so too, I, named so-and-so, from this day forth until the essence of enlightenment is reached, will generate the mind of unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment. I will liberate those sentient beings who have not been liberated. I will free those who have not been freed. I will relieve those who have not been relieved. I will lead to Nirvana those who have not attained Nirvana. Recite this three times to take the vow. Having taken it in this way, "Always, three times day and night, diligently generate the two aspects of the mind of enlightenment." Doing so will awaken the latent tendencies of the mind of enlightenment, restore what has been lost, and prevent forgetting. To show the certainty of how to obtain it: At the peak of aspiration, all things arise from conditions, the first verse is aspiration, the second is engagement, the third firmly obtains both, this is the unsurpassed view of Ocean Cloud. That is, the first verse is aspiration, the second is engagement.

Third, it is obtained in a manner that both are extremely firm, hence like the clouds of the ocean. Regarding this, the first, second, and third declarations show that aspiration, engagement, and the supreme nature of both being extremely firm will be obtained. Thus, if one thinks that at the time of the first declaration, making a commitment to engage should not be used for aspiration, then since the mind of aspiration pervades engagement as well, by taking the vows of engagement, aspiration will also increase along with it. Since engagement does not pervade aspiration, the Lamp for the Path also says: "Except for the mind of engagement which is the vow itself, the true aspiration will not increase." Moreover, these occasions such as taking vows are the time to seek the meaning of conventional bodhicitta, so in the conventional time, since all phenomena depend on conditions, here, at the time of taking aspiration and engagement simultaneously, these two are not different, but are of the nature of one mind-stuff, one time, one action, being born as one entity. As the Bodhisattva Grounds says: "These two, aspiration and engagement, are of the same essence, so doing one thing for the sake of others, one should know them to be of an inseparable nature." Therefore, it is said. If so, what is the necessity of applying them as different rituals? It is aimed at those lineages who wish to generate bodhicitta but cannot take vows. In general, regarding the identification of aspiration and engagement, there are schools such as the Theravada Tooth Sect, which consider the worldly path as aspiration, and call engagement the power of seeing the truth. Some also say that those who possess manifest accumulation of merit are engaged, and those who do not are aspiring. In Krishna's Difficult Explanation, it is said: "Some say that the generation of bodhicitta that possesses manifest accumulation of merit is called the engaging bodhicitta, and all generation of bodhicitta that does not possess manifest accumulation of merit is said to be aspiring. Such statements are not straightforward. Here, it is said that a person with a purified mind aspires to enlightenment, abides in the training, and protects that training without decay, practicing the six perfections. That itself is the increase of bodhicitta and the engaging bodhicitta." Thus, the perfections of wisdom are explained.
