After taking refuge, regarding the ways to separately distinguish between generating aspiring Bodhicitta and engaging Bodhicitta here, the difficult commentary on the "Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life" by the great scholar Kṛṣṇa says: Thereafter, if one wishes to generate Bodhicitta, one should recite three times, "Just as all the Sugatas of the past, first generated the mind of enlightenment." From that time on, one is called a Bodhisattva and possesses the qualities mentioned earlier. If one wishes to take both Bodhicitta and vows, one should recite three times: "Just as all the Sugatas of the past, first generated the mind of enlightenment, and abide in the training of the Bodhisattvas in due order, so too, for the benefit of beings, I will generate the mind of enlightenment, and likewise, I will train in the training in due order." Thus it is said. Although this is the case, following the view in the "Compendium of Trainings" that considers engaging mind and vows as one, here we do not separate the rituals of aspiration and engagement, nor do we take vows separately. The mere thought of "attaining Buddhahood for the sake of others" is merely generating Bodhicitta. Why? Because the "Lamp for the Path" says, "Without turning back, make a vow, to generate the mind of enlightenment." Like the Bodhicitta generated with all sentient beings as its object, vowing not to abandon it until enlightenment is attained, this is the characteristic of aspiring mind. If one is able to train in its precepts, one should know how to combine "Just as all the Sugatas of the past, first generated the mind of enlightenment, so too, for the benefit of beings, I will generate the mind of enlightenment" to take the aspiring mind. The ritual for engaging mind is performed and taken as usual, because in reality, the distinction is made based on whether one can train in the precepts or not. One should understand that the two lines, "and abide in the training of the Bodhisattvas in due order," distinguish whether or not one can bestow the engaging vows. Here, in order to show the characteristic ritual of the Bodhisattva vows of unified aspiration and engagement according to the tradition of the teacher Nāgārjuna and the prince Śāntideva, based on the three refuges.

etc. After awakening with three requests for attention, the resolve of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas is magnified, and the precepts are properly taken. Although the suffering of the afflictive obscurations has been cut off, they still cling to the taste of the objects of the cognitive obscurations. They are liberated from the Shravaka and Pratyekabuddha Arhats who have not been liberated. From Brahma and other ordinary beings who are bound by the two obscurations, to the beings who dwell between the learners and the noble ones, the beings who have not been liberated are liberated, and from the intense breath of extreme suffering, the three lower realms that cannot obtain a breath are placed in a place of great breath. In short, all beings who are caught in the wheel of the twelve links of dependent origination are led to the city of peace of non-abiding Nirvana. The expression held by the laughing ceremony is based on the tradition of the previous sages. Among them, some virtuous people take vows themselves in front of the Buddha statue, or the way that beginners and ordinary people take vows from the lama is similar. If taking vows from the lama, the lama should tell the faults of samsara and the benefits of liberation, especially the nature of bodhicitta, so as to change their mind. The words of taking vows come from the "Chapter on Discipline", or taking the precepts said in the "Compendium of Trainings". Alternatively, the taker bathes, puts on good clothes, generates the perception of the spiritual friend as the Buddha, prostrates, offers a mandala, accumulates merit, offers the seven-branch offering, and then kneels on the ground with the right knee, palms together. Without anger and other afflictions in the mind, feeling weary of the edge of samsara, being free from attachment to the edge of quiescence, with a joyful and cheerful mind, through practicing the four immeasurables, recite the following: Just as the thousand and two Buddhas of the Fortunate Aeon, the Tathagatas, Arhats, Perfectly Awakened Ones, the Bhagavat, and the Bodhisattva Mahasattvas who dwell on the great earth, have generated the unsurpassed perfect Bodhicitta, so too, I, by the name of so-and-so, in order to generate the unsurpassed perfect Bodhicitta.
