etc., those who hate, those who scatter in all directions out of fear, I take refuge in the Vajra-holder. This is clear. Although it is so, these beings are so overwhelmed by the power of their evil deeds that they always vow to be servants of the meaningful Three Jewels, and even just thinking of being their slaves brings immeasurable merit. However, such a thought never occurs in my mind even in a whole lifetime. Seeing how sinful people like kings oppress others with their power, cutting off limbs, hanging them, putting them on the rack, harming them with punishments, controlling their bodies and lives and enslaving them, and how people enter into this with great reverence even though they were not originally established as their servants, I become disgusted. The glorious Lord of Speech, Drakpa, said: "This is done, then again this is done, and then again this is done," they say. Not knowing the changing nature of existence, pointlessly seeking trust, beings are like a boat entering the mouth of a crocodile in the mouth of the Lord of Death. Before the task is finished, they sink into the whirlpool of the country's waters. As it is said. Therefore, I, the sinful one, overwhelmed by the power of ignorance, like a clear mirror that is carefully polished, in the mind that is cleansed of the impurities of merit, contemplate the image obtained through the ritual of generating the mind. Thus, these methods of training the mind in connection with the seven branches and the preceding and following are indeed of great significance. We are not like those who believe in arising without a cause or arising from a lord, but have been wandering in samsara since beginningless time, and have been overwhelmed by the power of ignorance for countless lifetimes, being as ignorant as animals, not knowing karma and its fruits, and therefore accustomed to sinful actions, violating vows and natural transgressions, so that all the defilements that obscure the arising of the precious mind of enlightenment are purified in an instant like a skilled smelter washing a cloth for the sake of the Dharma, or like polishing a good mirror, and in the pure mind that has been well tamed, contemplate the unsurpassed bodhisattva vows obtained from the symbolic ritual.

It is to show the shadow and explain the merits of those methods. Then, in order to show the generation of devotion to the field of merit as the first of the actual ritual, (the text says:) "Hundreds of thousands of sins fall into the abyss, the sick are severely infected with epidemics, ordinary medical skills cannot save lives, only the supreme can be relied upon." That is, if one falls into a dangerous abyss and suffers from illness, even ordinary doctors who are proficient in the eight branches of medicine, Suomaluocha, etc., can hardly relieve their pain. As for us, those who are controlled by the five poisons of greed, hatred, ignorance, arrogance, and jealousy, plus the desire realm demon king, the evil ones, wearing lotus garlands, have five arrows on their heads, namely: making people arrogant, making people ignorant, making people dizzy, making people faint, and making people confused. Once these arrows are shot, they will hit the strongest of the five poisons, making it even more intense. Once controlled by it, one will fall from liberation and higher rebirth, and fall into the abyss of hundreds of thousands of sins. After falling, one will also suffer from various epidemics, such as the four leaks, four rivers, four unions, four acquisitions, three bonds, nine knots, eighteen existence bonds, ten entanglements, six afflictive grounds, six afflictive stains, five covers, five lower fetters, five higher fetters, ten grounds, two non-meritorious grounds, and fifty-seven kinds of fundamental impurities of yogis. Although there are many near afflictions, the main ones are one hundred and fifty-six kinds. Such a fierce epidemic, if only one of them breaks out, can destroy all the people in Jambudvipa, but ordinary medical skills are powerless to do anything about it. Why is this? Because diseases caused by wind, diseases caused by bile, and diseases caused by phlegm,
