That wisdom which is free from the middle and extremes of existence and non-existence is unborn and undying. Thus it is said. Therefore, the initial practitioner is one who is not settled. Even if a mind of great compassion arises once, the realm of beings is extremely unruly, and because of bad actions, they obstruct all the teachings that should be learned. Do not dwell with ordinary people, and have no regard for this life. Wear the armor of patience. Do not speak frivolous words. Make others happy, be content with little desire, be peaceful, gentle, suppress the eight worldly concerns, do not be attached to things, do not slander others, do not be the cause of others' sins, and go beyond a hundred yojanas from the side where there is dispute. Remembering the seven faults of samsara spoken by the Protector Nagarjuna and others. Always thinking of the benefit of beings alone, Emaho, when will these beings be able to be liberated from samsara? Alas, these beings tormented by suffering are so pitiful, one should remember in this way. As it is said in the Compendium: Whoever desires to definitely emerge from this Buddha Dharma, should treat all sentient beings equally with the perception of parents, abide in the mind of benefit and the mind of love, be without deceit, be upright, and speak gentle words. Also, as it is said in the Mother Sutra: Even if a Bodhisattva is greatly harmed by others, he should not argue with them, nor should he harm them or disturb their minds. Even if he is killed, he should not be angry with them. Do not be angry with any sentient being. One should generate a firm understanding of the Bodhisattvas. Also, as it is said in the Sutra of Courageous Intelligence: A Bodhisattva should regard all sentient beings as his children, and regard them as his own body. Thus, in order to generate the mind of the Great Vehicle by relying on the accumulation of merit, among the thousand Buddhas of the Good Aeon, when the Tathagata became famous far and wide, to the Tathagata named Light Garland, he offered coarse cloth; when the Sugata Radiant One appeared as a beggar, he offered an oil lamp to the Tathagata Amitabha, and made aspirations in the manner of accumulating merit as a preliminary. Thus it is said: The key point of Madhyamaka.

From the opening of the Jewel Box, the means of practice therein are the accumulation of merit, the purification of the continuum, and the special taking of refuge. Accumulating merit means performing the seven-branch practice three times a day and three times at night, reciting and reading the profound Prajñāpāramitā Sutra, reciting dharanis, making extensive offerings to the Three Jewels, holding feasts for the Sangha and giving offerings, holding children's banquets, giving extensive charity to the helpless, and giving extensive torma offerings to those who wander at night, and so on. Purifying the continuum also means, as before, reciting profound sutras, reading, reciting dharanis, performing the seven-branch practice, reciting the Three Heaps Sutra, cutting off the continuity of karmic obscurations, and confessing sins with scriptures such as the Suvarṇaprabhāsa Sūtra or the Drum Sound Chapter. Thus it is said. Taking refuge is the supreme power of reliance that subdues sins. In general, it is difficult for those with sins to generate bodhicitta, so as an antidote to that, the Sutra of Four Dharmas says: Sins done and accumulated will be subdued by the power of reliance. Among them, the power of reliance is taking refuge in the Three Jewels and not abandoning bodhicitta. Thus it is said. Among them, the distinctions of taking refuge are also explained by "Until the heart of enlightenment," and so on. Furthermore, the Ornament of the Sutras explains five powers: the power of friends, the power of causes, the power of roots, the power of hearing, and the power of the habit of virtue. The unstable and the stable arise. Thus it is said. Similarly, Master Asanga, following the White Lotus of Compassion and the Sutra of Ten Dharmas, also stated that it arises from four conditions and four powers: the four conditions are generating the mind upon seeing the perfection of the Tathagata, generating the mind upon seeing the benefits, generating the mind upon seeing the dangers of the degeneration of the holy Dharma, and generating the mind upon seeing the suffering of sentient beings. The four powers are: the power of causes, the power of application, the power of oneself, and the power of others. Among them, the first is: the lineage of previously being accustomed to the Great Vehicle.
