The five kinds of ignorance are the cause of happiness, while wisdom is the cause of liberation. For those with such intellectual power, the method of accumulating merit on the Mahayana path is explained: Even the accumulation of many kalpas will be shortened. Like the vehicles of livestock and elephants, the sun and moon, etc., the conduct of progress is infinitely fast and slow. With the power of great wisdom and diligent means, the vows of three countless kalpas can be destroyed. Among them, for Bodhisattvas with extremely dull faculties, there are thirty-three countless kalpas, that is, three each in the accumulation and application paths, and three each in the ten bhumis. For those with medium faculties, there are seven, two each in the accumulation and application paths, one in the path of seeing, and two in the path of cultivation. For those with sharp faculties, there are three. As it is said in the "Madhyamaka Ratnaloka Sutra": Sharp faculties realize enlightenment in three countless kalpas, medium faculties in seven countless kalpas, and dull faculties in thirty-three countless kalpas. Therefore, the limit of sharp faculties is also set at three countless kalpas. From the initial generation of the Mahayana mind, dull faculties mix with the Hearer Vehicle, some are slightly stable, some are slightly unstable, and some are firm and respectful only to the Mahayana even for the sake of life, as well as the mind of enlightenment, compassion, the six perfections, the four reliances, and the four means of gathering. Due to the difference in the power of diligent wisdom, the two accumulations are gradually accumulated equally, and with great mental strength, the accumulation of many kalpas can be shortened in each moment. Therefore, the manner of destroying the vows of three countless kalpas is shown by five metaphors of fast and slow. In the "Entering the Determined and Undetermined Mudra Sutra," it says: Manjushri, there are five kinds of Bodhisattvas. What are the five? For example, progressing like a livestock cart, progressing like an elephant cart, progressing like the sun and moon, progressing like the miraculous powers of Hearers, and progressing like the miraculous powers of the Tathagatas. Bodhisattvas who progress like a livestock cart and progress like an elephant cart are those who regress from enlightenment.

何者为？如太阳和月亮般行进，如声闻的幻化般行进，如来般的幻化般行进的菩萨们，是从菩提不退转的。其中，如畜生之车般行进的菩萨是哪种呢？譬如某人想要超越如五佛刹微尘数般的世间界，于是乘坐畜生之车启程，经过漫长的时间，行进了百逾缮那，却被巨大的风轮吹回，倒退了八十逾缮那。那么，这个人乘坐畜生之车，能够超越那些世间界吗？或者在从劫到不可说又不可说的劫中，能够超越一个世间界吗？回答说：世尊，不能，没有机会。世尊开示说：同样，如果有人发起菩提心，却不执持、不读诵、不讽诵大乘，不如理作意，而是亲近声闻乘，与他们一起交往，读诵、讽诵声闻乘，思择并完全通达，甚至让别人读诵，直到理解，那么，此人会变得智慧迟钝，从无上智慧之道被拉回而退转。那位菩萨因修习菩提心而生起的智慧之根和智慧之眼也会变得迟钝而衰退。这就是如畜生之车般行进的菩萨。其中，如大象之车般行进的菩萨是哪种呢？譬如某人想要超越那么多世间界，于是乘坐具有八支的大象之车启程，经过百年，行进了二千逾缮那，却被巨大的风轮从那条路上吹回，倒退到没有机会为止。同样，如果有人发起菩提心后，也执持、读诵、讽诵大乘，如理作意，却

Bodhisattvas who proceed like the sun and the moon, who proceed like the magical transformations of the Hearers, who proceed like the magical transformations of the Tathagatas, do not turn back from Bodhi. Among them, what is a Bodhisattva who proceeds like an animal cart? For example, if someone wants to transcend as many world realms as there are dust particles in five Buddha-fields, and so rides in an animal cart and sets out on the path, and after a long time has gone a hundred yojanas, but is turned back by a great wind-wheel and driven back eighty yojanas, then can that person, by means of the animal cart, transcend those world realms? Or, even in a kalpa to an inexpressible and again inexpressible kalpa, can he transcend one world realm? He replied: "Lord, he cannot, there is no opportunity." The Lord said: "Likewise, if someone generates the mind of Bodhi, but does not hold, read, or recite the Great Vehicle, and does not properly apply his mind, but instead attends to the Hearer Vehicle and associates with them, reads and recites the Hearer Vehicle, contemplates and fully understands it, and even causes others to read it, up to the point of understanding it, then he will become dull in wisdom, and will be drawn back and regress from the path of unsurpassed wisdom. The faculty of wisdom and the eye of wisdom of that Bodhisattva, which arise from cultivating the mind of Bodhi, will also become dull and deteriorate.
