If it becomes like that, merely aiming for temporary glory for oneself, or not considering this life as great, but expecting the happiness and results of the next life, this is the mind of a special small person; and also abandoning the two paths of the middling person who has the mind of a Hearer and Solitary Realizer, who aims only for the state of liberation where one is freed from samsara oneself. Just as our teacher initially generated the mind of enlightenment, accumulated merit in the middle, and finally attained complete enlightenment and taught the Dharma, all of which was done for the benefit of sentient beings alone, abandoning self-interest, and desiring to attain Buddhahood by training in the six perfections and the two stages of the path, just like a hungry person seeking food and a sick person tormented by thirst, in order to exhaust the suffering of all sentient beings, this is the superior thought, the characteristic of the precious mind of enlightenment. The Lord Maitreya said: "The generation of the mind is for the sake of others, desiring perfect and complete enlightenment." Therefore, a person who possesses the generation of the mind is a Mahayana practitioner, and merely separating from it, one leaves the Mahayana, and also abandons the main part of the cause for the means of realizing emptiness. Although there are other aspects of qualities such as thinking that one has realized the profound meaning that is only the object of terminology and the realm of foolish meditation, one still falls into the Hinayana. Hearers and Solitary Realizers also have love and compassion, but they do not have the courage to take upon themselves the burden of benefiting limitless sentient beings and eliminating suffering. As it is said in the Ratnavali: "From the Hearer Vehicle, the aspiration and practice of the Bodhisattva and the dedication of merit are not taught, how can one become a Bodhisattva?" Thus, even if the burden of liberating sentient beings arises, in the present situation, I cannot completely accomplish the benefit of even one sentient being. Therefore, even if one becomes a universal monarch or Brahma, it is not possible. Therefore, even if one abides in the state of two Arhats, one can only place a few sentient beings in liberation, but one cannot place all sentient beings in omniscience. Therefore, that which is capable of completely fulfilling all the temporary and ultimate benefits of limitless beings is the Buddha.

Because it is unique, one generates the desire to attain the state of perfect Buddhahood for the benefit of all sentient beings. As the master Āryadeva said, "If oneself and this world wish to attain the unsurpassed Bodhi, its root is Bodhicitta, as stable as the king of mountains." Now, in order to explain the nature of generating the mind, that is, the difference between the aspiring mind and the engaging mind. Among them, the mind that vows for the result is the aspiring mind, and what is learned is to practice self-other equality, self-other exchange, and cherishing others more than oneself. This is the summary of practice, and its nature completely abides in the four immeasurables such as loving-kindness. The mind that vows for the cause is the engaging mind, and what is learned is to rely on the completely pure realm of the six perfections. As it is said in the Sutra Requested by Maitreya, "Maitreya, aspiring for the benefit of others is also great loving-kindness, great compassion, great joy, and great equanimity. Right practice is also the six perfections." Therefore, the aspiring mind is to desire to attain Bodhi, and by learning its precepts, one vows for the result; the engaging mind is to actually practice its Dharma, so it is to vow for the cause. As it is said in the Gaṇḍavyūha Sutra, "Noble son, among sentient beings, it is difficult to obtain the unsurpassed perfect Bodhicitta. Even more difficult than that is to truly enter the unsurpassed perfect Bodhicitta, which is even more difficult." The master Śāntideva applied this meaning to a metaphor, saying, "Bodhicitta, in brief, should be known to have two differences: that is, the aspiring Bodhicitta and the engaging Bodhicitta. Just as one knows the difference between wanting to go and actually going, the wise should also gradually understand the difference between these two. "Just as a man who is determined to go to a certain place begins to prepare, similarly, in order to benefit sentient beings after becoming a Buddha, the mind that arises with the desire to obtain profound and vast meaning, the wisdom of this mind stream being stable, is the aspiring mind, and truly entering the Bodhi conduct is the engaging mind. Therefore, before taking vows, it is the aspiring mind, and after taking vows, it is the engaging mind.
