In the Mahāyāna path, beings, endowed with their own strength, progress through the five paths and ten bhūmis in sequence, in conjunction with the accumulation of three countless kalpas, by focusing on the three types of selflessness: the selflessness of persons, which is emptiness of an inherently existent self; the emptiness of grasping and grasper as being other than substance; and the selflessness of phenomena, which is emptiness of being established by their own characteristics of conceptual imputation. They aspire to attain unsurpassed enlightenment, possessing the fruit of the three kāyas, having completely abandoned the afflictive obscurations of clinging to a self of persons and the cognitive obscurations of clinging to a self of phenomena. Regarding the aspect of the result, there are three types of nirvāṇa: nirvāṇa with remainder, nirvāṇa without remainder, and non-abiding nirvāṇa. They also assert the classification of the three kāyas of the Buddha, and that the dharmakāya has two aspects: the svabhāvakāya (essence body) and the jñānakāya (wisdom body), as well as the classifications of spontaneous accomplishment and continuous non-cessation. These are merely the essential points of the philosophical tenets; detailed characteristics should be understood in the Precious Garland of Tenets. The supreme secret of the Tathāgata's speech is the definitive meaning Madhyamaka of the Great Vehicle. Therein, speech, which exists in two aspects of sound and meaning, is merely posited as words that abandon the two extremes. As stated in the sūtra: "Truth and falsehood, these are extremes; existence and non-existence, these are extremes; therefore, the wise, having abandoned both extremes, do not abide even in the middle." The Madhyamaka of meaning is solely the manner of uniting the two truths inseparably. Among them, the first of the two, Svātantrika, is: All that appears is established as conventional truth, its characteristic being like an illusion; ultimate truth is unestablished, like the sky; this is the system of the Madhyamaka Svātantrika. As stated in the Destruction of Confusion: "In the conventional truth with objects, in the ultimate truth, all objects and subjects are liberated." Thus, from the aspect of appearance, all appearances appear like illusions, but in ultimate truth, they are not established as truly existent in the slightest, like the sky. That is to say, from the perspective of the basis of designation, all phenomena are established as conventional and ultimate truths depending on the mind. Even though truth is not established in their nature, they are asserted to be established by their own characteristics from the aspect of terminology, hence they are called Svātantrika. Among them, there are two differences: the view that ultimate truth is not accepted as an object of cognition, and the difference that it is accepted as an object of cognition. The first is that even appearance in conventional truth does not exist.
