I don't know. If there is nothing, what should one think about? Therefore, one should strive to listen, that is the cause. Through thinking and meditating, vast wisdom will arise. Thus it is said. Therefore, the way in which listening is the cause of the arising of wisdom, and the way of going to the forest after listening. Lord Maitreya says: Wisdom is supreme, its basis is listening, therefore listening is supreme. And in the Compendium of Trainings it says: One should seek to listen, then one should dwell in the forest, and one should strive to meditate. Thus it is said. So, how does one determine through listening? The Dharma to be determined is the precious teachings of the Buddha. On this, the Treasury says: The Teacher's sacred Dharma is twofold, namely, possessing the nature of scripture and realization. As it says, the teachings have two types: scriptural teachings and realized teachings. The former is to understand the meaning of the twelve branches of speech, etc., and the latter is to apply what one has learned to one's own mindstream and directly realize its realization in the mindstream. Therefore, to realize the realized teachings without error depends on understanding the scriptural teachings properly. Although this is so, those with little intelligence should not be discouraged by this. If one does not strive for listening that is appropriate to one's own intellectual capacity, there will be bias towards Dharma and individuals. Therefore, one should accustom oneself to thoroughly studying and contemplating the very place where one is to practice, and ultimately learn to increase the power of one's mind. Why? Because even if the place where one is to practice is small, if one has thoroughly studied and contemplated it, one will experience its meaning without confusion, and if it becomes the path in this way, then the wisdom arising from meditation will arise from within, which is established by valid cognition. Therefore, as a sign that meditation is not mistaken, it is necessary that the more one meditates, the more the discriminating wisdom increases accordingly, because the nature of wisdom that focuses on suchness and allness is the wisdom of higher vision. Furthermore, the classification of wisdom is twofold: conventional realization and ultimate realization. The first is, as it says in the Ornament of the Sutras: If one does not strive in the five fields of knowledge, even the noble ones will not become omniscient. Therefore, in order to subdue others, to follow others, and to understand everything oneself, one should strive for this. Thus it is said.

In order to subdue those who do not believe in the Dharma, (it is necessary to study) the reasons of grammar and logic; in order to gather those who have faith, (it is necessary to study) craftsmanship and medicine; in order to be able to understand everything oneself, (it is necessary) to seek inner knowledge, which is the special need of this time. If all of these are sought with the intention of generating Bodhicitta in order to attain Buddhahood, then there is no difference. Here, in order to measure the suchness of selflessness from the perspective of the general meaning, and in order to show the measurement from the perspective of direct perception, it is necessary to establish the key of wisdom as the measurer, and in order to establish the treasure of the holy Dharma as the measured, therefore (it is necessary) to establish the distinction between the two truths: With the wisdom of the measurer, measuring the measured Dharma, it can be measured as the two truths and the four hidden meanings. The nature of all Dharmas is suchness, abiding in the three doors of liberation is the ultimate truth. In order for the Dharmas to enter the path as they appear, after measuring with reason, it is established as the expedient path of guidance. Through these two, understanding what should be relied upon or not, this knowledge is the key to viewing the scriptures. Among them, the nature of all Dharmas, entering the door of liberation, namely emptiness, signlessness, and the fruit of non-aspiration, non-manifestation, detachment from desire, namely abandoning hatred, completely destroying ignorance, becoming without samsara, and also without self-nature in essence, being separated from the three of arising, abiding, and ceasing, this is the ultimate truth. The Dharmas enter as they appear, arising and ceasing, going and coming, purification and liberation, the five aggregates, the eighteen realms, the twelve sense bases, etc., appear as various aspects, touched by wisdom, thought, and speech, and can be measured by the power of reason, all the teachings that establish these are expedient teachings. As it is said in the Sutra taught by the noble Inexhaustible Intelligence: What is the Sutra of ultimate meaning? What is the Sutra of provisional meaning? Those Sutras that teach for the sake of entering the path are called Sutras of provisional meaning. Those Sutras that teach for the sake of entering the fruit are called Sutras of ultimate meaning. Those Sutras that say there is self, sentient beings, life, person, individual, born of power, possessor of power, doer, feeler, and various sounds
