The arising of definite wisdom, all qualities depend on the virtuous friend, from the depths of one's heart, feeling weary of the temporary and ultimate aspects of worldly conduct, having firm conviction in dependent origination. The higher and lower vehicles, the two truths, the provisional and definitive meanings, the allowances and prohibitions of the sutras and tantras—what are contradictory teachings to others are not contradictory to the wise, and they have the great power of mind to practice them. All of these are qualities of wisdom. Like a mother's love for her child, there is nothing comparable to wisdom. What wonder that such perfection arises! The ten powers of the Sugata are the most excellent of powers, incomparable, and all the most excellent actions, as well as all other collections of qualities, arise relying on such wisdom as their cause. Similarly, even worldly arts, crafts, sciences, protecting oneself, acquiring food and wealth, and benefiting others, etc., all arise for those who have wisdom. In the world, art is the most precious treasure, and how many different sciences there are! Wisdom and mantras that completely protect, various different dharmas, various kinds of distinctions, various kinds of doors to liberation, and in this and that way benefiting the world—these are what the great sons of the Victorious Ones demonstrate, and all of these arise from the power of wisdom. Without wisdom, let alone knowing how many and what kind of teachings of scripture and realization there are, even if one strives on the path of the perfections, such as generosity and discipline, these will not become causes of liberation, nor can they be completely purified. Without wisdom, when seeking results, generosity itself will not become pure. If the light of wisdom does not dispel darkness, then discipline will not become pure. Mostly, because of the lack of wisdom, discipline becomes tainted by faults and afflicted with defilements. Without wisdom, even if one obtains the position of king or leader, etc., from the fruit of previous generosity, even if one gains fame once, it will immediately decline. Even if one's intention is good, one will have little power to benefit others, so even worldly treatises need to be studied. If wisdom is inverted, the mind will be confused, and the quality of patience will not abide in it. Good.

Holding an unpleasant attitude towards accusations of wrongdoing is like a king without merits enjoying great fame. In short, the darkness of ignorance and delusion is inherent in the minds of all beings, and it cannot be reversed until the sun of wisdom rises. The causes of this are evil friends, laziness, idleness, fondness for sleep, the ignorance of impaired mindfulness, meditating on non-conceptual contemplation, arrogance that manifests without knowledge, strong wrong views, and shrinking away from the vastness of the Dharma, leading to the exhaustion of the mind and a dislike for associating with the wise. Obstructing it is the proclamation of the devil's secret language that hearing and thinking are meaningless. Laziness and idleness, relying on bad friends, being dominated by sleep, being in a state of non-conceptualization, having no faith in the supreme wisdom of the Buddha, being suppressed by the arrogance of wrong views and not seeking teachings, due to attachment to base thoughts, not believing in associating with the wise, evil thoughts are as strong as poison, and wrong views prevail. Ignorance is the root cause, and the wise should abandon it. Therefore, one must first rely on the merits of hearing. That is to say, for ordinary individuals, if one does not rely on the wisdom that arises from hearing, then the merits of thinking and meditation will wander astray. The wisdom of hearing is said to be the root of everything. If the mindstream of someone is noble, then due to the strength of past habits being firm, even if one does not engage in extensive hearing and thinking in this life, there may be self-arising wisdom. Even if this is the case, one must still strive until the four individual correct knowledges and the qualities of the ninth ground are not born in one's mindstream. Just as the youth Norzang prayed: May all qualities be without measure. Therefore, if the sign of one's own mindstream being that of an ordinary person is that the mind is full of afflictions, and one is similar to other beings in terms of ignorance, then merely relying on their good wishes will not be helpful. Therefore, one should first seek the wisdom that arises from hearing. If one does not do so, then the wisdom of thinking and meditation is like a fire under the snow, and will eventually wander astray. As the teacher Hero said: Those who have little hearing, blindly practice.
