It abides in the perfection of wisdom. As the Compendium says, "The five perfections and all the qualities of enlightenment, all of them rely on the perfection of wisdom." Furthermore, as the master Shantideva said, "The enemy of darkness, obscurations of afflictions and knowledge, is emptiness." Thus, as long as the five, such as generosity, are not grasped by the perfection of wisdom, they are like the blind. For example, even if a painter completes all the work, if he does not open his eyes, he will not receive wages. As it was said before, "When wisdom grasps it completely, then one obtains the name of having found the eye. Just as the work of painting is completed without eyes, one does not receive payment until the eyes are drawn." Therefore, first, let us briefly explain the benefits of wisdom. The master Aryadeva said, "The qualities seen and unseen, the root of all is wisdom. Thus, in order to accomplish both, one should take hold of wisdom completely." Likewise, first, in the stage of the path of accumulation, the samadhis of the bases of miraculous powers must also be accomplished by relying on wisdom. Just as the light of the sun and moon is supreme among the lights of jewels, lamps, and so on, wisdom is the supreme means of clarifying what is to be known. As the commentary on the Letter to a Friend also shows, in the path of preparation, the chief of the five faculties and five powers is also wisdom. If one has the protection of wisdom, one will know well the faults of generosity being harmed by stinginess and faith being obscured by wrong views, and one will be skilled in the means of exhausting afflictions and increasing qualities. The master Virarakshita said, "These merits of generosity and so on, with the protection of wisdom, become especially powerful." And, "The nature of the faculties of faith and so on, as with other faculties, wisdom is the chief. Possessing its protection, knowing qualities and faults, one becomes skilled in the means of exhausting afflictions." Thus, when a Bodhisattva is in the stage of learning the path, even if he cuts off his own flesh and blood to give as alms, he sees it as taking medicine from a medicinal tree for someone suffering from illness, and since it is not certain that he will obtain a good rebirth by relying on generosity, thoughts of pride and discouragement do not arise. Acting with discipline

Unbearable austerities do not give rise to pride, and focus on benefiting others; mere patience cannot overcome afflictions, and there is no shrinking from vast actions; one cannot negate and cannot bear to abandon, etc.; knowing the faults and merits of patience, therefore one does not become weary of wrong practices; because one knows that the basis of diligence is not inverted, and is skilled in preventing laziness, one is able to quickly complete the path; the nature of meditation that does not confuse the causes of samsara and the limbs of enlightenment, and the object and method, etc., all of these depend on the manifestation of the suchness of wisdom. As it is said: If the eye of wisdom is clear, even if a Bodhisattva gives his own flesh, he will not discriminate like a medicinal tree, and there will be no high or low. Thus, it should be explained for other aspects such as discipline as well. Furthermore, a Bodhisattva who possesses wisdom, even if he becomes a universal monarch, will not be deceived by the merits of desire; even if he has a strong mind of loving-kindness towards lovable beings, he will not be mixed with attachment; even if he has unbearable compassion for the suffering of others, he will not be overwhelmed by sorrow, and there will be no laziness that becomes an obstacle to virtue; even if he has immeasurable joy in the perfection of others, his mind is like an illusory emanation; even if he treats all beings equally with great equanimity, he will not directly favor, and will not be distracted from any altruistic activity that needs to be done, these are also produced from wisdom like a minister. As it was said before: Possessing sensory pleasures as beautiful as divine substances, Bodhisattvas with great royal power, their nature does not become inappropriate, this is also due to the power of possessing a minister of wisdom. For loving-kindness that benefits others and has the same taste, completely abandoning the contamination of attachment; for compassion for the unbearable suffering of others, not being discouraged by the burden of sorrow; even if possessing supreme joy, not being truly distracted; not being distracted from benefiting beings, possessing great equanimity; these merits and the path of antidotes, are adorned by the prevention of great wisdom. In short, having certainty in the infallibility of cause and effect, knowing Dharma and non-Dharma, and from the depths of one's heart for the qualities of the teacher and the teachings
