Now, it seems very important not to confuse the wisdom of individual observation. As it is said, Light Protector (འོད་སྲུངས་) asked: What is individual observation? Light Protector, wherever there is no self, making individual observations, etc. Furthermore, individual observation without timidity is truly individual observation of the Middle Way teachings. Light Protector, furthermore, one does not individually observe form as permanent, nor does one individually observe it as impermanent; this is called individually observing the Middle Way teachings. Light Protector, what is called permanent is one extreme. What is called impermanent is the second extreme. What is in the middle of the two extremes? That is what cannot be thought of, cannot be pointed out, is not a support, is not an appearance, is not consciousness, is not existent. Light Protector, this is individually observing the Middle Way teachings, which is clearly stated. Therefore, before cultivating shamatha and vipashyana equally, looking at all sentient beings with the view of great compassion, and placing the mind closely on the object of focus, is a special method of the Bodhisattva. At the time of the main practice, a completely peaceful mind does not abide in the two extremes, and abiding in a state where the elaborations of subject and object are pacified is the complete purification of its wisdom. As stated by the noble Inexhaustible Intellect: What is the method of the Bodhisattva? What is the manifestation of wisdom? Because when one abides in equanimity, looking at sentient beings, placing the mind closely on the object of great compassion, that is his method. Because one enters into samadhi in peace and complete peace, that is his wisdom. If focusing on the object of great compassion is mistaken for samadhi, then all the stages of cultivating relative bodhicitta will become ultimate bodhicitta, and thus there will be no dharma to connect to the Mahayana path. Without that, at the time of the main practice, the virtuous aspects encompassed by the three superior qualities, such as no object of focus, will also disappear. Therefore, in the state of truly abiding in equanimity, all reliance on means does not arise because it is with an object of focus. However, in its preparatory practice and subsequent attainment, all reliance on means arises.

Now then. In the Secret Sutra of the Thus-Gone One, it says: "Son of good family, just as fire burns from fuel, and ceases when there is no fuel, so too, the mind burns with an object of focus, and ceases when there is no object of focus. Therefore, the bodhisattva who is skilled in means, being completely purified by the Perfection of Wisdom, also knows that the object of focus tends towards quiescence, but does not make the object of focus on the root of virtue quiescent. Nor does he cause the object of focus on afflictions to arise, but he also places it on the object of focus of the perfections. He also individually contemplates the object of focus on emptiness, and also gazes with great compassion on the object of focus on all sentient beings. Son of good family, in this way, the bodhisattva who is skilled in means, being purified by the Perfection of Wisdom, obtains power over the object of focus." Thus it says. In this way, whatever the object of focus of the bodhisattva may be, all of these are without non-abiding for the sake of manifestly accomplishing the omniscient wisdom. The bodhisattva who completely dedicates all objects of focus, that is the skillful means of the bodhisattva. Pages 500 to 601. Skillful, that is, seeing that all phenomena follow after enlightenment. This clearly shows that all objects of focus are conditioned. Because it is so, the characteristic of dedication is also completely established. The Perfection of Wisdom is liberated from the three times, the three realms, and good and evil themselves, therefore there is no dedication for it. In the Tantra of True Union, it says: "His sin and merit, the two are separately conceived, the wise should abandon these two." And so on, there is much extensive explanation. Therefore, at other times when rising from that samadhi, one should view all the worlds as illusion, mirage, dream, water moon, and visual distortion. Afterwards, with the knowledge that is attained, one should generate the mind in this way: "Alas! These sentient beings, due to complete affliction, have not understood such profound Dharma, and so they wander in samsara, how pitiful!" In this way, the conventional bodhicitta is made manifest. Again, all phenomena should be equally placed in the state of the ultimate bodhicitta of the samadhi of non-appearance. When one is free from the faults of sinking and excitement and abides equally,
