Due to the busyness of making a living, afflictions arise, and even if some wish to practice samadhi, all these situations should be considered. They break their vows, do many things they shouldn't, view things in a reversed way, cling to worldly omens of good and bad, their body and mind cannot be tamed, their minds are restless and scattered, they do not incline towards the noble path, they indulge their senses, they enjoy gossiping, creating discord, they slander the noble ones with harsh words, they compete for power and gain, they speak meaningless words and lies, they dislike the benefits, respect, and gains of others due to greed and jealousy, they harbor hatred, they generate harmful thoughts towards sentient beings in various ways, and they hold wrong views, believing that there is no cause and effect, and so on. For example, liking and clinging to things in work, liking and clinging to jokes, indulging in sleep, seeking material pleasures, liking beautiful images, pleasant sounds, fragrant smells, delicious food, soft touches, and liking to think and analyze, and so on. The scriptures have extensive discussions on this. In the Sutra on Mindfulness, it is also mentioned: 'Noble sons, these ten things will hinder the samadhi and recitation of Bodhisattvas.' What are these ten things? They are: listening to noisy conversations, drawing pictures, composing poetry, astrology, contemplating constellations, claiming the food obtained as one's own, thinking of accumulating wealth like a flesh-eating woman, relying on kings, not consulting with the wise, inviting others to enjoy comfort, and living in places haunted by ghosts. These are the ten things.' Therefore, one should abandon these and abide solely in the non-distracted stream of mind, thereby practicing common samadhi. Its function is to attain great suppleness of body and mind, thereby making this life happy and serving as the basis for accomplishing miraculous powers. Its result is to obtain the qualities common to the Shravaka vehicle, such as clairvoyance, liberation into emptiness, exhaustion of defilements, subjugation, and so on. As stated in the Ornament of the Sutras: 'It generates happiness, masters the realm of clairvoyance, is the leader of all dharmas, these three are possessed by them.' Having fully understood such samadhi, the wise

It perfectly accomplishes the ground. Thus it is. Even merely relying on the continuum of meditation has immeasurable benefits. One turns away from the qualities of desire, afflictions naturally subside, one rejoices in solitude, and experiences many doors of samadhi. Because clairvoyance arises, the benefit of others is accomplished. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, it is like a bird without wings that cannot fly in the sky. Likewise, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva cannot teach the Dharma without relying on clairvoyance. Thus it was declared. Among the six clairvoyances, the Treasury of Knowledge says: Magical power, divine ear, and mind, Former lives, death, birth, and exhaustion of knowledge, Should be done first. Therefore, knowing the realm of magical power, knowing the divine ear, knowing the minds of others, remembering the wisdom of former lives, knowing death and birth, one should first accomplish the exhaustion of outflows. The explanation of worldly meditation is: The preparatory stage of the first dhyana has investigation and analysis, The actual state has no investigation but only analysis, The remaining three have neither investigation nor analysis, The former is the preparatory stage for the latter, It is known as the basis for the noble path. Among them, there are two: those that engage with form and those that engage with formlessness. Those that engage with form are the four dhyanas of learners and ordinary beings, their preparatory stages, and their samadhis. With aspiration, not possessing the limbs of enlightenment, it is the cause for manifestly accomplishing existence, possessing equanimity, and possessing investigation, possessing analysis, it is the preparatory stage of the first dhyana, which is the mind of application. Moreover, having transcended desire and sinful dharmas, possessing investigation, analysis, joy, and bliss, at that time it is called the first dhyana. From that very state, without investigation, only possessing analysis, it is called the distinguished mind of the first dhyana. When one is free from investigation and analysis, having abandoned the desire for the ground of the first dhyana, possessing joy, bliss, and complete inner joy, at that time it is called the second dhyana. Having abandoned the desire for the second dhyana, possessing bliss and equanimity.
