After prostrating in all places and making offerings to the best of one's ability, and after performing the seven branches such as confession, sit on a very comfortable cushion in the full lotus posture of Vairochana, or half lotus posture is also acceptable. Do not open your eyes too wide, nor close them too tightly, but focus on the tip of your nose. Keep your body straight without leaning forward or backward. Keep your shoulders level, without one being higher or lower than the other. Align your nose with your navel. Place your tongue against the root of your teeth. Do not let your breath make noise, be heavy, or be agitated as it flows in and out, but breathe in and out gently and naturally, and remain with mindfulness placed within. Having settled in this way, first, focus your mind single-pointedly on the blessed form of the Tathagata that you have seen before, and on the qualities and characteristics of the Buddha's appearance in the world that you have heard about, and thus cultivate calm abiding. As it says in the noble Samadhiraja Sutra: 'The body of gold, like the color of gold, the protector of the world, beautiful in every way, whoever places their mind on that object, that Bodhisattva is in equipoise.' Thus. The basis of practice is the mind, and its nature is as stated in the Ratnakuta Sutra: 'O Sharak, if one searches everywhere for the mind, it cannot be found at all. Because it cannot be found, it cannot be an object of focus. Because it cannot be an object of focus, it is neither past, nor future, nor present.' Therefore, one can focus on any object, whether it is form or formless. Pacify all distractions towards external objects, and let the appearance of elaboration dissolve into the nature of the single Dharmata. And this dissolving is not entering into a state of foolishness where appearances cease, but is naturally peaceful. Because it is without substance, it is subtle; because its essence is unestablished, it is difficult to see. It is not the cessation of phenomena, but the destruction of the concept of clinging to phenomena, which is the samadhi that possesses the complete abandonment of faults. As it says in the previous sutra: 'Samadhi is the place of equanimity, peaceful, subtle, and difficult to see, because all concepts are destroyed, therefore it is called samadhi.' Having thus settled in this state, bind it with the rope of mindfulness, so that the focus is continuous and is not stolen away by factors such as dullness and excitement, this is calm abiding. And fully understand its nature.
