Regarding how to ascertain Vipassanā, it is said in the Noble Jewel Cloud Sutra: Śamatha is one-pointedness of mind. Vipassanā is truly discriminating. Thus it is said. Therefore, when consciousness abides without focusing on an object, and from this arises extreme pliancy of body and mind, this is samāhita, which is the nature of śamatha, but it must also be associated with Vipassanā. Because śamatha can only temporarily suppress afflictions, it cannot eliminate obscurations. However, the discriminating wisdom that is one with śamatha, of the same essence, at the same time, and with the same function of eliminating obscurations, thoroughly destroys latent tendencies and sees all phenomena as illusory, therefore it is the reasoning of Vipassanā that possesses subsequent attainment. As it is said in the Noble Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra: Samādhi subdues afflictions. Wisdom destroys latent tendencies. And, in the Entering into Non-Discrimination Sutra: Transcendental wisdom equally sees all phenomena as being like the expanse of the sky. What is attained after that is seen as illusion, mirage, and the moon in water. Thus it is said. If classified, there are three kinds of samādhi: the enjoyment of ordinary beings, the excellent meaning discrimination, and the Tathāgata's virtue. And there are the four samādhis with and without investigation. Similarly, there are the four formless absorptions, these are the number of types. The samādhi in the continuum of one who has not entered the path is the enjoyment of ordinary beings, which is samādhi and formlessness. The samādhi of the path of accumulation and application of one who has entered the path is known as the excellent meaning discrimination, which manifests the path of liberation. The samādhi of the noble ones from the first ground onwards is the Tathāgata's virtue, because it is without outflows. As it is said in the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra: The samādhi of the enjoyment of ordinary beings, the samādhi of the excellent meaning discrimination, and the samādhi of the Tathāgata's virtue. Among these, the samādhi of the enjoyment of ordinary beings is the samādhi in the continuum of one who has not entered the path, it exists in samādhi and the formless absorptions, it is the worldly path. Among the two transcendental paths, the samādhi of the excellent meaning discrimination is the path of liberation manifested by the samādhi of the path of accumulation and application after entering the path. The samādhi of the Tathāgata's virtue is the samādhi without outflows in the continuum of the noble ones from the first ground onwards. All

The nature is to hold the mind within. The cause is continuous mindfulness and diligence. If the mind wanders, re-establish it. The function is to generate happiness and accomplish miraculous powers. The result is the attainment of clairvoyance and so on. Thus, the nature of meditation is the mind abiding in one-pointedness within, and the cause of its accomplishment is continuous mindfulness, which must be achieved by relying on the aid of diligence. As stated in the Ornament of the Sutras: "The mind abides within, relying on mindfulness and diligence." At that time, if the mind is moved and scattered, one should stabilize calm abiding with the nine ways of settling the mind as taught in the Perfection of Wisdom Sutra: "Settling the mind here, settling it constantly, settling it repeatedly, settling it closely, taming, pacifying, extremely pacifying, one-pointedness, settling in equanimity." Among these, the first is settling the mind on the object of focus. The second is settling constantly on that same object. The third is recognizing and abandoning distraction. The fourth is abandoning distraction and focusing again and again on that same object. The fifth is generating joy. The sixth is seeing the faults of distraction and thoroughly pacifying displeasure. The seventh is dispelling dullness and sleep, and so on. The eighth is entering without effort. The ninth is practicing equanimity when the mind has become balanced. These are the instructions taught by Lord Maitreya. At this time, one should strive to abandon the opposing factors to samadhi. As stated in the Ten Wheels of Ksitigarbha Sutra: "Then, the Bhagavan addressed the Great Brahma: There are ten kinds of dharmas that should not be dwelt upon or practiced. If an evil yoga practitioner follows even one of these, then the roots of virtue in the desire realm will not be fully accomplished. Even if they are accomplished, they will immediately be lost and degenerate. What need is there to mention the samadhis of the form and formless realms, the teachings of the three vehicles and the one vehicle? What are the ten? For example, some people in the world, although they wish to practice samadhi, are greedy for the necessities of life.
