Just as water birds fight over a fish until it is taken away, and as soon as the fish is gone, the fighting stops and they are at peace, so too, the more material possessions one has, the more one suffers from fighting and strife. If one completely renounces material possessions, there will be no torment of suffering and one will attain happiness. Therefore, those who have no wealth avoid these things, and because they have fewer affairs, it is easier to achieve meditation. In particular, the Teacher of gods and humans said that among all riches, contentment is the best. Always be content, and if you are content, even if you have no wealth, you are truly rich. As quoted earlier. The disadvantages of associating with ordinary people are: the nature of ordinary people is like that of children. Children are covered with clouds of wrongdoing, praising themselves and proclaiming the unpleasant things about others, relying on the rough tongue of the afflicted serpent, thinking that any fluctuating wealth is permanent, ungrateful, distorting the image of satisfaction, the flames of hatred are fanned by the winds of slander, like monkeys they inflict various harms, like crocodiles they widen the stomach of sin, like venomous snakes they destroy all who meet them, like fire they burn the trees of virtue. One should keep far away from childish companions. Therefore, the nature of children, that is, ordinary people, is afflicted, so they regard their own faults as virtues. They are also good at proclaiming the unpleasant qualities of others. Because they cannot control their afflictions, they increase wildness and sinful habits. They also see the changing and suffering nature of samsara as permanent and happy, so they are always diligent in abandoning virtuous and peaceful activities. The Bodhisattvacharyavatara says: "Associating with children will inevitably lead to unwholesome things such as praising oneself, denigrating others, and delighting in the talk of samsara." In particular, these people are ungrateful, repaying kindness with harm, and because they have various desires, there is no time for satisfaction, and it is difficult to judge whether they are friend or foe. The Bodhisattvacharyavatara says: "In one moment they become friends, and in another moment they become enemies, and they are angry at things that are pleasing."

Therefore, it is difficult to please ordinary people. Just as they like to harbor grudges and sow discord, they do not keep mindfulness close, and they do not associate with harmonious assemblies, so the great wind of slander arises, and like monkeys, all actions become a source of harm. When many gather together, there will be fighting, quarreling, and much arguing, and even when two gather together, they are a basis for jokes and ridicule. The Blessed One said in the Sutra: Many will quarrel, two will talk, like the bracelets of a young woman, one should abide in peace alone. Among them, the bracelets of a young woman are, for example, when a young woman is grinding sandalwood, she feels uncomfortable because she is wearing many bracelets on her hand, so she gradually takes off the bracelets, leaving only two bracelets, but those two bracelets will also collide and feel uncomfortable, only leaving one bracelet will feel comfortable. Similarly, in a solitary place, one will also quarrel with friends, and two will also become objects of affliction, so living alone is praiseworthy. This was said by the teacher Dana Shila. In particular, now, beings in the degenerate age of the five degenerations are tormented by the demons of the five degenerations, and for no reason they also harm others through the three doors of body, speech, and mind, slander the Dharma and individuals, like to divide into factions, and even if they protect their own faction, they are not harmonious with them. In a letter to the king, it says: How one gives benefit, so one causes harm. When one has, one feels weary, and when one does not have, one feels pain. When one associates, one sees faults and quarrels arise. This is the characteristic of beings. Furthermore, they are also jealous of those who are not equal, and have a desire to suppress those who are equal, despise those who are inferior, and if they see those who are slightly wealthy and praised and respected, they become arrogant, and even if they hear a slight fault of their own, they become angry, and they like the means of killing, robbing, and hunting, so the belly of sin is larger than a crocodile, the meaning is little, the things are many, very scattered, like noise, only sin and non-virtue, like a poisonous snake, they give harm to anyone they meet. Associating with them, making friends with them, and serving as attendants, also burns the trees of virtue like fire, so naturally one degenerates from the Dharma. Shantideva said: If one speaks of benefit, they become angry, and I also turn away from benefit.
