Having abandoned oneself and taken up the conduct of discouragement, such a person is riding on a ship of faults. Regarding this, although we have listened to many collections of the Greater and Lesser Vehicles and promised to practice them, in reality, once it comes to putting them into practice, we bear the burden of all the fruits of maturation that rely on the great grounds of virtue, such as those arising from generosity, those arising from ethical conduct, and those arising from meditation, and we are lazy and do not strive, we are attached to sleep, and although we are widely known in the world, we are attached to perverse efforts and evil deeds that are not suitable here, like the power of sesame oil mixed in a container, and we are fond of worldly affairs such as commerce and agriculture, like a silkworm entangling itself in its own cocoon, and having seen a slight difficulty, we become discouraged, thinking that this task will surely not succeed, and we destroy the power of our minds and abandon our ability through our own efforts, and because we despise ourselves, the opposing side collapses, and our minds are filled with discouragement, and we accept the conduct of discouragement, etc., like becoming a vessel of many faults, riding on a ship with broken iron nails, even a small adverse circumstance will cause an obstacle to it. If one is weak, even a small downfall will cause harm. With discouragement and abandonment of effort, how can there be liberation from poverty? So it is said. In particular, the first commitment, and then the habit of abandoning it midway, the concordant result of this cause will increase sin in this life, and in the next life its result, suffering, will also increase, and any work that has been started will not succeed. It is best not to start, but do not turn back after starting. In the next life, one will become accustomed to it, and sin and suffering will increase, and the time of others and the time of results will also become inferior, and that too will not succeed. So it is said. Therefore, in general, the activity of Dharma is only to prevent faults and accomplish qualities, and there is nothing else. In particular, the object of practice of the Great Vehicle path is a state that is difficult to reach even by relying on intelligence, and when a person like me thinks that he cannot accomplish this task, and when laziness and the adverse circumstances of despising oneself overwhelm the mind, such a foolish and weak inferior being

If it is said that even they can attain Buddhahood by generating the power of diligence, then when I have obtained such an excellent support of higher realms, what difficulty is there in accomplishing great things? One should thus elevate one's spirit. As it is said in the "Questions of Good Arms," and the meaning of the "Heap of Jewels Sutra" in the "Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life": "When shall I attain enlightenment? One should not be discouraged. The Tathagata speaks truthfully, speaks this truth. Bees, flesh flies, bumblebees, and likewise any insects, they too generate the power of diligence, and can attain the rare and unsurpassed enlightenment. We who are born in the human race, who can distinguish benefit and harm, knowing what to take and what to leave, if we do not abandon the practice of enlightenment, why should I not attain the fruit of enlightenment?" And as it is said in the "Garland of Jewels": "Therefore, the Buddha attains enlightenment after a long time, the wise do not lose heart, to eliminate faults and increase virtues, one should always strive in this." This is to distinguish the nature of diligence. Subduing the four maras is armor-like diligence, walking the path of the ten bhumis is application diligence, not fearing, not retreating, without contentment, the diligent one accomplishes all wishes. As it is said in the "Collected Topics": "Armor, application, not fearing, not retreating, not being content, to these, generate joy." Among these, armor-like diligence is: Before a Bodhisattva strives in any application, one cannot be satisfied with just the rough actions of body and speech, but needs to accept a resilient armor that cannot be destroyed by any circumstance. For example, thinking: Even if I have to stay in the great hell for countless eons to remove the suffering of one sentient being, and only then attain perfect enlightenment, I will not abandon the end of diligence. What need is there to mention other small sufferings and short times? Why abandon the armor so easily? One should thus strengthen one's resolve. As it is said in the "Questions of Steadfast Resolution Sutra": "Having put on firm armor, Bodhisattvas, for each action of each sentient being, even to the end of samsara..."
