After drinking, the mind cannot experience a state of tranquility. Therefore, hatred is very easy to manifest. Its similar cause is anger, and its antidote is patience. Therefore, the Bhagavan said: Anger destroys and renders fruitless even the merits accumulated over thousands of kalpas, like burning a house and then burning other things. Therefore, hatred is called anger. As the *Moon Lamp Sutra* says, even vast roots of virtue cannot protect: Whoever harbors a mind to harm others, neither discipline nor learning can protect him, neither meditation nor seclusion can protect him, nor can generosity and offerings to the Buddha protect him. Therefore, a Bodhisattva should not generate anger towards the one who harms him, and should examine his own faults, both direct and indirect, viewing the thought of anger as an enemy. Why? Because the sin of anger follows oneself and becomes an enemy in every way, while the one who harms is accidental and has no connection with oneself in any way. As it says in the *Bodhicharyavatara*: Others may dislike me, but they will not devour me in this life or another. Therefore, I do not desire them. Thirdly, if one lacks the patience of not being afraid of the meaning of profound Dharma-nature, one will be far from the meaning of the transcendent. Because patience related to the worldly path must rely on sentient beings to take objects, rely on the ripening result, and rely on the path of merit to be patient. Therefore, its nature is contrary to the ultimate truth, connected with attachment, connected with fabrication, and possessing discriminating consciousness, thus also contradicting the Prajnaparamita. Therefore, completely abandoning fabrication and conceptualization is the way of transcendent patience. As the *Ksitigarbha Ten-Wheel Sutra* says: Sons of good family, the patience of a Bodhisattva is of two kinds: worldly and transcendent. Worldly patience is taking objects towards all sentient beings, relying on the ripening result, and on

It is through relying on the path of patience that one practices patience. Transcendence of the world is, eliminating the four inversions, cultivating patience without attachment, and purifying the three actions. Thus it is said. Therefore, the first two rely on the worldly path, serving as companions to the five aspects of skillful means, which are primarily practiced by beginners. The latter is the transcendent aspect, which, due to the stability of habituation, corresponds with the nature of wisdom itself. In short, without the three austerities of patience, one cannot accomplish the other five perfections, such as generosity and discipline, as they are. For example, just as it is difficult to reach the desired place if one enters a path surrounded by enemies, thieves, and wild animals without the help of an army, so too, because generosity and the others are closely related to their respective opposing factors, one must rely on the three austerities of patience to guard against all those faults, and therefore one should generate the power of wisdom. The perfection of diligence is: With diligence that is never late, All virtuous dharmas at will, Like geese walking in a garden, Engage without abandoning the abyss of laziness. Therein, the nature of diligence is the single-pointed mind that rejoices in virtue, never exceeding the time. For example, in a desolate monastery or a place full of fear, a pair of swans, male and female, brooding over eggs with distressed hearts, when the chicks' abilities are perfected, are single-mindedly focused on going to the garden alone, not interrupted by laziness or doubt. In the teaching on the three vows, it says: Supreme enlightenment is achieved through diligence; if it were not so, then even rabbits and cats would attain enlightenment. It also says: You should be homeless and without intimacy, and do not gather cattle and donkeys. You should not choose a place of laziness, abandon non-virtuous dharmas, and be diligent in virtuous dharmas. Light Increaser, I praise dwelling in virtue and abandoning busyness in many ways. Thus it is said. Again, to show abandoning its opposing factors: Evil deeds are entangled by the ropes of attachment to busyness, the power of laziness is suppressed, and effort also loses its strength.
