This manner is taught by the teacher Asanga in the Root Commentary on the Bodhisattva Grounds. Here, the near enemies of the first five perfections, such as generosity, are miserliness, afflictions, hatred, laziness, and savoring the taste of meditative absorption, these being the five opposing factors for each. The near enemies of wisdom are wrong views and correct views regarding the benefits of virtue, the causes of virtue, and the results of virtue, as well as the five things that obstruct the accumulation of virtue. Having understood these as they are, abandoning their five opposing factors and obstructions is the cause of perfectly accumulating the discipline of virtue. Here, too, it is to show that six places of examination are taught. What are the six places of examination that are taught? One should examine the prosperity and decline of one's own Dharma. If one's own path of Dharma is not lost, then one should do the benefit of others. One should examine the mistakes of ordinary beings who have lost their own benefit. The six examinations are from the Compendium: A bodhisattva who strives in the discipline of benefiting sentient beings should examine the six places of discrimination separately, namely, oneself, others, lack of resources, abundance of resources, lack of Dharma, and abundance of Dharma, these are the six places. What is called lack of resources is not obtaining robes, alms, and so on, and the continuity of those who have obtained and use them is cut off. Abundance of resources should be understood as the opposite of that. What is called lack of Dharma is the deterioration of learning, and the words of the ultimate Dharma spoken by the Tathagata, those who have not heard them before cannot hear them, and those who have not heard them before cannot think about what they have not thought about before, the obstacles to hearing and the obstacles to thinking, and forgetting hearing and thinking, and not obtaining the virtue arising from meditation, not being able to obtain it, and those who have obtained it completely deteriorate. Abundance of Dharma should be understood as the opposite of that. Thus, oneself and others are the basis of the prosperity and decline of Dharma and resources, so the other four are also included in them. Having examined the six places in this way, the way to engage and disengage can also be easily understood by quoting the meaning of the Compendium: If one's own place of learning is not deteriorated, and if one can accomplish great benefit for others, then one should focus on the benefit of others,

Therefore, in the time of ordinary beings, it is the opposite of this. Later, in order to accomplish the benefit of sentient beings, one should examine one's own deluded thoughts and the faults arising from them with the eye of wisdom, and the main thing is to protect what has declined and what is in accordance with (the precepts). From the aspect of great compassion, one should also accomplish the benefit of others as a side effect. If great benefit can be achieved, then there are times when it is permissible to relax small precepts, such as giving up villages for cities, giving up land for oneself, and giving up oneself for the Dharma. In this regard, the bodhisattva's precepts are governed by the mind of the Vijnanavada school, the means of great compassion, and the nature of wisdom that is the opposite of the mind that clings to reality and the afflicted mind. Therefore, if it is certain that great benefit for sentient beings can be achieved, then even if it obstructs the subtle precepts of the lower body and speech, one should accept the mind of enlightenment, as well as the higher intention, means, wisdom, samadhi, liberation, and any virtuous discipline that is the source of holy qualities, because one has compassion and loving-kindness, so there is no fault in a virtuous mind. As mentioned above. That is to say, one should not give up great benefit for the sake of small benefit, but rather give up small benefit in order to accomplish great benefit, and ultimately protect the supreme Dharma that is to be accomplished, and there should be no decline other than that. As it is said in the Jataka: For the sake of the family, give up one; for the sake of life, give up the family. For the sake of the country, give up the city; for the sake of oneself, give up the land; for the sake of the Dharma, give up oneself. Like that. In general, bodhisattvas must train in accumulating virtuous Dharma and benefiting sentient beings as soon as they take the precepts, but it is difficult to truly benefit others until they have clairvoyance. Therefore, starting from generating bodhicitta and taking a yidam, they mainly learn the ways of acting that are in accordance with the ground. For beginners, the discipline of precepts is the main thing, so it is the practice of the yidam. For those who act with faith, the discipline of accumulating virtuous Dharma is the main thing, so it is the practice of samadhi. For those who have entered the ground, benefiting sentient beings is the main thing.
