Saso. He requested three times in this way. The Teacher, by agreeing in accordance, it was as if he had ordained, fully ordained, and gathered into the assembly by that very agreement. The ninth is: When the father and son met, King Śuddhodana sometimes thought that only his son had great power and miraculous abilities, and was arrogant and proud; and sometimes he thought that in the past the Blessed One was worshiped by gods and demigods, but now only humans worship him, and he was discouraged, and because of these two reasons he did not see the truth. The Blessed One commanded the noble Maudgalyāyana's son to advise his father, and he performed four kinds of miraculous conduct in the sky, thereby pacifying the king's pride. And because the Blessed One blessed the gods, the assembly of gods, in the Nyagrodha Garden, the divine craftsmen built immeasurable palaces, and Indra and all the others gathered there, and the four guardians of the world guarded the doors, and so on, showing this, he made the king's discouraged mind high, and made the mind abide in equanimity, and thereby taught the Dharma, and made King Śuddhodana see the truth. The tenth is: King Prasenajit said that the ascetic Gautama had attained unsurpassed perfect enlightenment and had become a Buddha. Someone asked: Even the older ascetics and Brahmins and Completers do not claim to be such, so how could the wise Gautama, who was born not long ago and whose ordination is recent, not be lying? The Blessed One replied: One should not despise a person who has the marks of a king, or a lion who walks on his chest, or a monk who keeps the precepts, with wisdom. The Blessed One explained these reasons in detail, making the king believe that the Blessed One was the all-knowing and perfect Buddha, and he was delighted by this merit. The eleventh is: The Blessed One is peaceful, the retinue is peaceful. The Blessed One is tamed, the retinue is tamed. I also do not cut off the minds of others, and I also cause others to abide in guarding their vows. However, Devadatta said to the Blessed One: The Blessed One is old and frail, and has forgotten how to instruct the fourfold assembly. If you entrust the Sangha to me, you will be freed from labor and enjoy happiness. The Blessed One replied: Now is not the time to explain in a gentle way.

Thinking of my retinue, I would not even entrust them to Shariputra and Maudgalyayana, the best of the Shravakas, who are like good vases. Would I entrust them to you, who are foolish like a corpse and eat snot? Like this, he is skilled in the means of subduing others with words. Furthermore, the fear and desire brought about by miracles are as follows: When the Blessed One went to Rajagriha (founded in the mid-6th century BC, near Patna, Bihar today), the elephant of King Ajatashatru, named Protector of Wealth, was a Naga elephant, powerful and unruly. It often ran out of the fence and harmed many people and livestock. Devadatta wanted to harm the Blessed One with it, so he gave the elephant trainer a pearl necklace worth a hundred thousand gold coins, telling him: "Tomorrow, when the Shramana Gautama comes out, provoke the elephant." The elephant trainer also informed the other people in the city, telling them to be vigilant and protect themselves. When the Blessed One went out with five hundred monks, the elephant Protector of Wealth was released. It made a loud noise and ran towards the direction of the Teacher with all its might. The Blessed One said: "The power of the Ten Strengths is incomparable, now look at the power of strength!" After saying this, he emanated five lions from his fingers, and the elephant was terrified and ran away like mad. The Blessed One then manifested fire pits on all sides, so that the elephant had nowhere to escape. Seeing that only the direction where the Blessed One was was peaceful and happy, it slowly went to the Buddha's feet, prostrated, and followed behind. Finally, when it circled to the city wall, the elephant could not see the Buddha, and was very depressed. It rubbed the ground with its trunk and died, and was reborn as a god among the Four Great Kings. These are all described to recall the Buddha's qualities and deeds, and as metaphors. Furthermore, it is incorrect to describe the Buddha's deeds as something that a Bodhisattva can accomplish. The discipline aimed at benefiting sentient beings is upheld by eleven kinds of perfect causes, and abides in all the disciplines that benefit sentient beings. For example, in the case of benefiting sentient beings, for each of the eleven kinds of sentient beings, eleven kinds of benefits should be accomplished as appropriate.
